How exactly does the backwards compatibility on a BD player work to be able to play DVDs and CDs? Do the players have a red laser and a IR laser head in addition to the blue laser? Or, does the blue laser somehow track to and read the larger pit/pitch disks?

Depends on the make and model of the player. The earlier models have dual optical pick-ups for BD and DVD/CD; a few of them only reads BD and DVD. For the newer models, there is only one OPU.
The same thing happened when DVD was first introduced. fuad |

there can be one or more OPUs (optical pickup unit) but like with CD/DVD you have different diodes.
