Default Disney and DTS MA

When Disney first went lossless they went with Dolby True HD. But of late Disney has been using DTS MA on there newer Blu Ray released movies.

1. Sleeping Beauty
2. WALL-E
3. Chonicles of Narnia Prince Caspian

I have not seen anything posted by Josh on the news section about them going DTS MA exclusive. Has any one heard anything about Disney using DTS MA exclusivly. I would love it if they did.

You forgot "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert"

They like experimenting with different sound/video codecs, no official word...

I'm guessing they feel the need to save space with anything over 5.1

Yup, Disney's release always one of the best.

Using uncompressed multichannel LPCM takes a lot of space on the disc, which means they have to compromise the video size and bitrate.

With extra space, they can maximise the video bitrate. DTS-HD MA / Dolby TrueHD tracks are smaller but they have to pay licensing fees to use it. So Disney is really going the extra mile for a quality disc, they're willing to spending more.

will Pinocchio be 4:3 like the trailer? i know there's nothing can be done with a film if its origins are 4:3... but widescreen is so much nicer to look at!

Yes. Pinocchio will be 4:3. It would be a travesty if it weren't.

And to stay on topic, I hope Disney continues with DTS HD-MA on releases as it offers those without the capability for lossless a better soundtrack

To have widescreen, they'll have to do pan & scan cropping. I prefer to see original aspect ratio, so pillarbox will do just fine.

I wouldn't want to see Pinocchio in anything other than OAR! Also... it's unbelievable that it'll have a 7.1 track.

Disney releases Enchanted and The Nightmare Before Christmas feature spiffy mixes in TrueHD. Cars & Ratatouille sound great with PCM; the Pirates movies sound good too (especially the second one, which is probably my single favorite mix in my collection due to the consistently immersive use of the surrounds).

If the mix is good, I don't really care which uncompressed or lossless format delivers it to my ears.

Josh is reporting that Disney's Miricle At St Anna's is also coming with a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track.
I hope Disney is sticking with DTS-HD MA as I hope Armageddon will have one too

I would assume the sound will mirror the bombastic laserdisc DTS soundmix.

Actually Disney started as strictly PCM.

It does seem as though they are heading towards DTSMA. Very interesting.

DTSMA: Fox, Uni, Disney?
Dolby THD: Sony, Para, WB

It seems that DTS has been doing very well for itself, now they just need more players to decode it. Their saving grace is that the majority of people who want HD sound will have receivers and pre/pros that decode it.

That seems to be the big thing for. I have HD audio equipment as do many people at the forum, but those who want to experience blu-ray in all its glory have to buy this equipment.

I think 1080p is great but only half the experience. So what I don't get is why only a majority of people would want HD sound. I would think everyone, once they've heard HD sound would need HD audio.

It's like watching a movie on an airplane and your ears haven't popped. Then, they pop and everything sounds crystal clear. That's the difference between lossy and lossless.

And Woody, I'm not berating you. Your comment just sparked a thought and a concern.

Considering Disney has always given us uncompressed/lossless audio, what difference does it make?

That's incorrect: there are no additional license fees for use on media.

The money maker for DTS and Dolby is only the playback side. That's where license fees come into play.

The only thing i see is more use of 7.1 since it's only takes 4.5mbits in DTS HD MA 24/48 mostly...

Yeah, it is nice to save space especially with 7.1, but why's it matter if they're using Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA?

It makes no difference in AQ, personally I am intrigued by the "business side" of it.
