Went to 2 BB in my area. Both told me that PS 3 does not upconvert and std DVD may look a "little" better, but not near to what a stand alone like the S 300 could do. If this is true, why all the hyp on the PS 3 if were only interested in movies?

never listen to anything a BB employee tells you. 90% of the time they are wrong. At least that has been my experience.

Best buy employees are idiots half the time. The ps3 does up convert to whatever hi def resolution you got it selected it.The up converting is very impressive imo. You need hdmi to be able to upconvert movies that are commerically released. Wont work through component it does work if you copy the movie and play it on a dvd-r.

are you kidding me? i had the same thing happen to me about a week and a half ago (posted on it too) regarding disinformation. in this instance (maybe in mine too) i really think its intentional misleading in order to sell a product. most consumers are ignorant...and thats what theyre banking on.

Is it that they are trying to give out false info, or they simply don't stay informed? When the PS3 first came out it couldn't upscale, it took a firmware to add that feature.
Then again maybe I'm just putting too much faith in humanity. |

Oh well. It's tough keeping up on all information on all products a store carries, especially for the wages Best Buy pays. At one time it was definitely true that the PS3 did not upscale dvd, and that store's demo model still might not have the latest firmware. I'm sure if each store had a dedicated Blu-ray expert that only kept up on the one specific product line, then he'd certainly know the current info. But I'm sure the employees are doing what they can to keep up.

i respect and appreciate the good faith in humanity stance - offering them grace but really if i was a salesperson and someone asked me a question and i wasnt familiar with the product or just knew the basics - i would seek out the right answer. i would feel responsible to make sure that they knew what they were getting into. my problem is, whether innocently ignorant or not, if you dont know - you find out. and if you cant find out - admit that you dont know. dont feed them false information. especially when your job is to HELP people in a SALES role. there are no excuses. (stepping off of soapbox)

Yeah except the kept and keep insisting the only studio supporting Blu-ray is Sony and everyone else is behind HD-DVD. Still happening way too much for my liking. Not sure how they managed to "keep" up on that "information".

I agree with all that has been said. I find most best buy employees to be pushy and arrogant, and they are also usually wrong. This is a really bad combination. If possible, I would strongly suggest you go to Circuit City from now on. They are usually more knowledgeable, and their policies on hardware purchases are much better. If for any reason you are not satisfied with the product in 30 days, you can return it and A) get your money back B) return for same product or C) return for another product. Pretty awesome deal I think.

Even though I fully agree that you should never ask the sales people, in this case, let's be honest, for most of the PS3s life what they said was correct. Until FW 1.8 it did not upscale DVDs. Their info is just out of date by a bit. I am not apologizing for them, in the end they are misleading people, but it does not compare to some of the stuff I heard in the past where you ask yourself where it came from.

Find him, choke him, beat him in public, and then staple him to a wall.
