I'm definitely interested in seeing it. The film's description reminds me a lot of Shindô's The Naked Island.

Agreed. This is a great movie. I'm not sure why more people aren't talking about it. I wonder when it will be released on BR in the US.

Here's a fairly quick, and slightly rough mock-up of a cover using the official one as a basis, but sticking closer to the original poster's color style. I think it looks worlds better, and classier than that cluttered bloody mess.

I'm not one to get upset over cover art, but this time, I just laughed when I saw that clutter-cover xD. Sounds like the special features won't include de Wit's shorts. :S Might go for the Japanese release.

was curious what the Japanese edition has:

The movie "The Red Turtle" is directed by Michael Dudok de Wit and co-produced by Studio Ghibli becomes Blu-ray. It won "Un Certain Regard Special Prize" at The 69th Cannes Film Festival. This edition also includes "Father and Daughter," the animated short film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2001. Also includes his short animation works digitally remastered by the director himself. Slipcase packaging (digipak) with a booklet.
Special Feature / Bonus Track: making-of, dialogue between Isao Takahata and Michael Dudok, trailer, interview with Michael Dudok

I'm sure it's not English friendly

is it true that this movie doesn't have any spoken dialogue? If so, I could just import the french release...

Basically, yes. However, the main character does say "hey" a few times. Remember, if you got the French release, non of the extras will have any English subtitles.
