Hey guys,
Looking at getting a PS3. Based on the ones available now, which one do I buy? Aren't certain ones less noisy when playing DVD's, and certain ones play PS2 games and certain ones don't? I believer there's an 80G, 160G, 40G, and maybe a 60G? |

The 60GB and 20GB ones have the best PS2 capabilities. They both have long been dis-continued.
Some of the 80GB packages have some ps2 abilities. I never think about the noise factor as my PS3 is in the gear rack outside the theater room. -Brian |

Does this one have backwards compatibility?

Partial I believe.
The way I understand it and it may have changed but the following is how I know it: 20 - full ps2 compatibility, no memory slots and no wifi 60 - full ps2 compatibility, memory slots and wifi 40 - no ps2 compatibility, memory slots and wifi 80 - partial ps2 compatibility, memory slots and wifi 160 - no idea.... |

Ok, if youre going through a normal retailer and not a reseller or someone who hoards the older models, the best you can do is the 80gb or the 160gb.
The new 80gb is NOT backwards compatible and neither is the 160gb. They do consume slightly less power as their chipsets are smaller than their predcessors. The 160 also comes with Uncharted, a phenomenal game, so it's up to you if the extra 80gb of storage is worth the extra $40 (then another $60 for the game). If you can get the 80gb Motorstorm it is backwards compatable. It also comes with flash card readers and 4 USB slots (as opposed to no flash reader and 2 USB slots). However, it does not have the newer chips and may be a little louder and consume slightly more power. It all depends on what you want. If backwards compatability is a must for you, you will have to shell down some extra money for a system that is not in production anymore. If that isn't important, then you just have two systems to decide between, both with the same features (excluding the hard drive and the bonus game). Last edited by ngkf7; 11-25-2008 at 04:08 PM. |

Hey,
Just thought I would add... Some PS3's play SACD's. May not be an issue for you but I love my Dark Side of the Moon SACD and my 60GB plays it very well. I think the 80GB units played SACD's but not sure about the newest 80GB PS3's. -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 11-25-2008 at 03:17 PM. |

I would just buy a new ps3 and whatever gb version suites you the best I wouldn't worry too much about the backwards capabilities for they actually make the ps2 games looks horrible in the transfer...just get whatever suites you the best unless you know you wanna play a BUNCH of old ps2 games...

yuo can always switch out the HDD. get a PS3 with anything you may need, i only got an 80GB with BC because it had SACD support... i don't need the BC, due to my slimline PS2 working like a charm... but i sure as hell use all the USB slots, and if i only had 2, i'd be forced to buy a USB hub. that's just me thuogh. also, i would prioritize the cooler chipset over anything else if you have a PS2 or if BC is not important. you can always switch out the HDD, and buy a USB hub for more port,... although the SD card slot is VERY useful to me... when anyone in my family goes on trips, we use the PS3 as slideshow. works perfectly for pics. |
