The general opinion is do not do it because; 1) heat and electronics do not mix, 2) to reduce neck strain the TV should be mounted at eye level from your normal sitting position (above the mantel would be way to high), 3) routing cables (hiding) can be a real pain, and 4) mounting speakers for channels L, C, & R will be difficult if you have a surround audio system.

Ugh...

I could never understand the fascination/desire to mount/place a television over a fireplace. Depending on how much, or how often you watch movies/sports/tv programing or play games, you're going to be constantly tilting your head/neck to view your tv. I have friends that do it, and it's not an enjoyable experience to watch hockey games or movies at their place. I've tried to steer my friends that would think about doing it away from placing their televisions above their mantle, as much as possible.

Place your TV at eye level. Buy a nice painting, or portrait to place over the mantle. Just my opinion.

it's a bit "nouveau riche" for my taste. not that you have to be wealthy to own a flat panel these days but the idea behind it seem nouveau...

Have you guys seen a Gas Fireplace before????

There isn't nearly as much heat released as with a wood-burning fireplace....

Hang it up.... it'll be fine.

Are you even sure it can be mounted above the fireplace? In my case I bought a bracket to mount my TV above the fireplace but it turned out there were no wooden studs there.

I ended up mounting it at eye level to the right of the fireplace. With a stand just below the TV filled with electronics, it looks at first glance like it is resting on the stand. Turns out it looks good and is very comfortable to watch.

I suppose though you don't have the wall space somewhere else in the room?

The word you're looking for is gauche.

WHA-WHA-WHAT???!!!???

From the Hearth.com Q&A page:
Quote:
The average 24” set of vented gas logs burn 60,000 Btu per hour. However, smaller and larger sets are available ranging from 8,500 Btu per hour to 100,000 Btu per hour. Fireplace inserts range from 12,500 Btu per hour to 50,000 Btu or more. Vent-free gas logs and fireplaces range from 8,500 Btu to 39,000 Btu per hour.
(emphasis mine)

Do NOT place valuable electronics above a working fireplace, whether electrical, or fueled by wood, natural gas, or propane.

Heat is the natural enemy of electronics. Keep that TV away from all heat sources. In addition, allow plenty of room all around it so it can efficiently vent the heat that it produces while it is operating
