Default BBC Video Planet Earth only 1080i?

Ok I am confused here.

Reviews say 1080p for the BBC version with David Attenborough and that the Discovery Channel's version is 1080i.

So I ordered Planet Earth from DD during the sale.

Got it when I came home today.

Back of slipcase says that the video is only 1080i. And that due to some difficulty in filming in some habitats, some parts of this is not filmed in full HD.

2 questions.

1, is this a packaging error and that my copy is 1080p or that there is a new version out that is only 1080i?

2, is this blurb about some parts not in full HD normal and was apart of the series from the get go?

My copy came in a slipcase, has ISBN of 1-4198-5180-2 and UPC of 7-94051-40012-3.

Back clearly states that it is with David Attenborough and that the packaging has BBC on it, along with 2 Entertain.

I have a 4 disc USA version that is 1080p throughout. There is alot of confusion over this title as there seems to be at least 3 versions floating about.

USA - BBC 4 disc
USA - Discovery
UK - 5 discs (1 DVD)

I don't think the 1080p adds anything to the resolution of the actual picture. It would be interesting to see if anyone can confirm if the 1080p has more detail than the 1080i version. Personally I think its upscaled to 1080p.

You can tell which parts of the footage are not HD. Its very soft and blurry and only accounts for <5% of the whole production.

I think there is more confusion about this title than any other I've seen. Someone has got to have a definative answer!

I think the 1080i on the cover is a misprint, it really is 1080p.
Of course I'm not sure as I don't own it yet

Afaik the german and british version of planet earth are in 1080p, i don't know about the us version.
I own the german version (identical to the british release) and can confirm that it is 1080p. Leaves the question: How big is the difference, do you see a weaker picture and ist the 1080i inferior in every aspect, or it is even noticeably?

Default 1080p

The US David Attenbourgh version is 1080P. YES there is a noticable difference between interlace and progressive scan. The best way to describe interlace is a "gritty" texture to the video. Progressive is "smooth" as can be and more "lifelike".

But again, contradicting reports. Every person has 1080p version but the OP who has a 1080i version. Why do they have 1080i and we have 1080p?

To the OP, if you have a button on your remote for your TV saying info or something similar, press it and see what resolution is being output to your TV.

The packaging of PE might just be wrong. Of course, if your TV is not able to do 1080p, then its not going to say 1080p .

I thought Galapagos was much better than PE for PQ, that was 1080i.

I have the UK version and it says 1080i on the back.

There are parts of Planet earth however, which are blatantly not shot in HD. Those particular parts look as if they have been upscaled.

Those that were (close ups in particular) look incredible though.

My HDTV is a LG 52LG70 so it can display 1080p/60 or 1080p/24. I have not yet opened the PE BD yet since the back of the packaging on the slipcase says 1080i. If the packing use to say 1080p for the US release of the BBC Planet Earth... why was it changed to 1080i? My copy is the UK/BBC version of Planet Earth but was released in the US by Warner Home Video... Does the version released for the UK market have 1080p on the packaging?

It could very well be that the US version of the BBC Planet Earth release was always packaged and labeled as 1080i but the video is actually 1080p.

I dont know how this works but I know my PS3 upconverts my 480i DVDs to 1080p/60 when I display them on my HDTV... could be that the video is really 1080i as the packaging indicates and that folks just assumed it was 1080p cause the UK version was and the video is upconverted from 1080i to 1080p? Is that possible?

It might be 1080i, BBC & 2 Entertain also released Torchwood Season 1 BD and it was only 1080i.

My ISBN is 1-4198-5180-2 with a UPC of 7-94051-40012-3. It was purchased 7/1/08 and is the Attenborough version put out in the US by Warner. The back cover clearly says 1080p on mine. I have no idea why yours would say 1080i. I put it in my PS3 right now to reasure you and it shows up on my set at 1080 24p.

See this is what is confusing the heck out of me.

If it was packaged as 1080p why was it changed to 1080i... someone from Warner had to approve of this change, printers dont change things on their own. Was the video encode changed? I dont want to open my copy to find out.

Has anyone else ordered this during the DeepDiscount sale and gotten theirs?

I may just change a copy from a B&M if I see a 1080p version package.

Im gonna say that its 1080p. My PS3/Pioneer KURO setup would have certain options grayed out on the TV menus if I was NOT receiving a true 1080p signal. At least I think???

Either way, 90% of this release looks fantastic so no complaints here even if it is 1080i. Those having issues need to get a TV that properly deinterlaces 1080i. Like a Kuro. hehehehee

I was in wal-mart today and looked and their copy of Planet Earth had 1080p on the back of it. Really it sounds more like its the Discovery version than the UK version. I dont get it, since the upc and isbn match it should be the same release. Is their anyway you can take a picture of the back of the box for us, so we can maybe figure out what is going on here.

There was a section on the shelf at BB today, which had the 2-series set (Planet Earth, and Earth <something>) . There were 2 identical packages there, one for 99 and the other for 114. Grabbed the one for 99 after comparing the packaging and confirming they were the same...in line I'm reading the back and notice 1080i. Go back to the others for 114, they're in 1080p.

Bottom line is, they're both out there (at least in Canada).

Edited:
Apparently most of the film was recorded at 1080p30, but occasional this material was saved to disk at 1080i60 (from a p30 source).

Underwater footage was intentionally shot at 1080i60.

In this case, there may not be a "correct" format. Unfortunately, blu-ray does not support 1080p30, so 1080i may be the preferred format.

Just to add to the thread, I went and checked mine.

I have the 4-disc David Attenborough one, and it has the BBC Video and 2 Entertain logos on the spine. The ISBN is 1-4198-5180-2, UPC 7-94051-40012-3, and the box says 1080p.

Purchased it from Target sometime last December/January.
