Australia Close Encounters of the Third Kind - UHD Blu-ray/Blu-ray, 27th of September 2017.

I spoke with Universal Sony Australia about this yesterday, and it is listed in their database as coming on this date.

I wonder if the normal bluray is getting remastered as well. I think it still looks good though

The exsisting Blu-ray is downright gorgeous! I'm definitely down with a UHD version. I wonder how they'll do the different cuts.

I'm more than happy with the Blu-ray. I don't want to have to upgrade again.

I thinks the present color looks good. The atmosphere looks real. If it is too sharp, it might not be realistics at all.

Better not go through revisionist color timing like many older movies that have come out on UHD lately.

You don't actually have to view the film with HDR if you don't want to. It's an optional feature.

The blu-ray is quite good but there is some room for improvement - for instance, there is some white clipping. Not bad though. I'd hate to see the next release end up with black crush to over-compensate.

And they better not add teal. Close Encounters was never teal, regardless of what they may try to convince us at some point.

Agree. I got the 2 disc 30th anniversary blu-ray edition. 3 Cuts plus 64 page booklet and it looks great.

Original Version (134:44)
Special Edition (132:29)
Director's Cut (137:14)

US edition has this listed as Close Encounters of the Third Kind 40th Anniversary and 1 disc only. So looks like it won't be getting the extra special features disc. Yet a UHD 4K is always welcome.

has anyone heard if the audio might be getting remixed for the UHD to Atmos or even 7.1?

Hopefully not. Original mix is the only way.

Is it sure this will include them? Perhaps they'll just go with the "preferred" re-cut.

That would be a poor and unfortunate decision. There are fans who like all 3 versions, and fans who like just the original, special edition, or director's cut. Some fans like to switch back and forth between the different cuts - they watched the theatrical last time, so maybe next time they'll watch the special edition or director's cut.

The only proper way to release it is to include all 3 cuts.

Oh, I wasn't advocating a single version only. The Original and the Preferred cuts, especially, have bits I enjoy watching that aren't shared by all. I'm not such a big fan of the "Go Inside ..." cut, whatever it's called, though. And the final cut makes Roy even more of a cipher than he already is, which I think is a mistake.

One day, when I have enough sustained time and concentration, it might be interesting to make a fan edit.

There have been fanedits in the past that have combined the footage from the various versions, but they were only standard definition fanedits. I'm not sure if anything had been done like that in HD though.

According to Universal Sony Australia, the release date for this has been pushed back by a week. The current Australian release date listed in their database is Wednesday the 4th of October.
