Default Panasonic Viera 24p NIGHTMARE

OK here is the situation and I only have a few hours for someone to give me a no BS answer.

I bought a Panasonic VIERA 50" TH50PZ85U from Newegg.com and not until today have I realized that it doesn't support 24p playback. This scared me to death and made my stomach hurt when I read that. Now after hours of reading articles it seems some people mention a flicker, some people say "o its great, I love it!"

I need to know what to do here. It shows up in the morning and I need to know whether I should keep it or send it back. Insert Problem #2. I found out also that Newegg seems to NOT allow a refund on it. What that means is that I might be able to exchange it for the 800U which allows 24p but at a great cost to me financially to send the 85U back, pay the difference on the 800U, and pay for the shipping on the 800U to get to me.

Is all this worth it? What should I do? Should I just keep the thing? Problem is if I don't get an answer from newegg before it shows up then I might be stuck with it forever unless I figure out a way to sell it, recoup my money, and rebuy the proper TV (still causing me to pay more anyways).

Also I would like to output my Final cut pro edits to my Plasma through a Blackmagic intensity card to preview them on the TV. Problem is I shoot in 24p, but if the bluray movies look ok on the TV, then my edits should I assume.

I don't know what to do...I feel really screwed here.

well if it says 24p in the specs contact panasonic...if it doesnt have a something it says its false advertisement and they either need to fix it soon with a firmware upgrade if possible or you could pretty much sue them for a waste of money lol

yea only 800u does 24p (Panasonic website is very misleading). If you cant afford the 800u,Just keep the 85u its a great TV

The reviews that mention the flicker problem are on the 800U's and 850U's only. See link for reviews.

BLU-RAY still looks very good at 1080P/60 and being refreshed at 60HZ. If you want true 1080P/24 without the flicker issue I would go with the Pioneer Plasma. 100% of every Pioneer 1080P display properly handles 1080P/24 at 72HZ with no flicker.

I guess my question is are movies going to look weird b/c of the 2:3 pulldown? I don't want to unpack this thing and risk that...it scares me big time.

My thinking is that tons of people before 24p was possible on Plasmas watched Bluray without any bad comments...what about when the PS3 didn't have the 24p firmware update too?

BLU-RAY looks great at 60HZ. 48HZ, 72HZ, and higher refresh rates of 24fps just smoothes the judder during camera pans and has more of a natural film look.

Hope this helps:

I have a TH50PZ80U, PS3 for my blu-ray player, and a very discerning eye. I have NEVER noticed a problem with any movie, game, tv etc. I love the setup I have and expect you will too! Especially given the cost to return and upgrade the tv.

sorry for ignorance, but 24p is essentially 120hz correct? 120 is quite amazing but idk if it would be worth the, what looks like, almost $400 difference. But if you're already shelling out $1400 for it and you'll be keeping the TV for years try to upgrade it man, you'll end up truly happy

The native signal for 99% of BLU-RAY movie discs is 1080P at 24 fps. The reason BLU-RAY uses 24 fps is because 35mm and 70 mm film is encoded at 24 fps. In the movie theater film is flashed on the screen at 48HZ, 72HZ or higher multiplies of 24. High-end consumer TV's like Pioneer Kuro plasmas have 72HZ refresh rate for 1080P/24 and also Sony has 120HZ refresh rate for 1080P/24 LCD screens. Some lower cost consumer 1080P TV's will have only a 1080P 60HZ input or will have a 1080P/24 input that uses a 3:2 pulldown process to convert 24fps to 60HZ refresh. To get the maximum quality out of BLU-RAY a display needs to refresh at multiplies of 24fps without 3:2 pulldown.
BLU-RAY still looks very good at 60HZ and most people watching BLU-RAY's are still using 60HZ displays.

Well we'll find out tomorrow if its a mistake on my part...it'll be a big one but as I said, I'm not even sure I could return it even if it was...

I wont be buying a tv from newegg ever again. I love their site and service but this was a slipup on my part.

I would not lose any sleep over 24fps.

We've been watching movies more many many years at 60Hz. Hasn't been a problem before.

I would not consider this to be a nightmare, but if you are a video editor and you want to view back your edits, then the 800u would be the best way to go.

Wouldn't you have a professional monitor that supports 24Hz playback if you were a professional video editor?

Outside of that it's likely that 1% of the population would notice a difference between 48Hz/72Hz/96Hz/120Hz for judder elimination and 60Hz playback anyway.

People have been watching DVD's for years and never even knew anything about 3:2 judder until it became a topic in the forums when Blu-ray was released.

The -85 is a sweet set, I wouldn't lose any sleep

the PZ85 accepts 24fps but displays it at 60hz

the PZ800/PZ850 accept 24fps and displays it at 48hz

i have the PZ800 and the 48hz looks different, but i wouldn't say it looks better. I've been watching movies at 60hz my whole life, and i've never really noticed the uneven judder of 60hz.

remember 48/72/96/120hz doesn't eliminate judder. it just makes the judder less uneven

i would just keep the PZ85 if i were you, it's not worth the headache to switch TV's just because of 24fps/48hz playback

HI,

I was in the same dilema, bought 50PZ85U and was thinking of exchanging for 800U because of the 24p. i took my blu ray player to Magnolia to check 800U out, hooked it up to 800u and played Iron man in 24p, you know what it has really bad flicker in 24p mode, it's unwatchable. So i decided to keep my 85U because you are paying for a feature that doesnt work right on 800u. I am sure picture quality would be little better than 85U.

I noticed one more thing i used to watch blu rays with player (Panaonic BD55) set to 1080p 60HZ with 85U. When I switch it to 24p on the player it looks like its minimizing the judder on 85U. I am guessing that 85U is doing a better job in 2:3 pull down than the blu ray player, i may be wrong. What do you guys say?

Thanks

Got the TV, PS3, Guitar Hero, and my first Bluray disc (Die Hard 4). I love it Definitely all set now. I hate putting it on such an old oak dressor that looks like crap but man o man is that thing awesome. Makes my whole room look smaller.
