Default Kurosawa on Blu!!!

From Bill Hunt on The Digital Bits:

"...we've learned that the first wave of catalog titles by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa has just been announced for release on Blu-ray Disc in Japan. Rashomon, Ran, Madadayo and The Quiet Duel are all expected on 2/6/09 in a box set from Jesnet. So how does this relate to Criterion? Well, Criterion owns the U.S. release rights to many of the Kurosawa films, and was involved in the new HD transfers...."

I'm REALLY excited about Ran and Rashomon. Now bring on Kagemusha, The Hidden Fortress, and The Seven Samurai!

FTR, Criterion doesn't own Madadayo and Rhapsody in August in the US, although I haven't heard whether they've gone out of their way to re-acquire them.

Warner, OTOH, has nice-looking custody of "Dreams", and recently put an HD print up for download on PS Store.

The more Japanese and Hong Kong movies the better. Especially classics like Kurosawa films.

I love Kurosawa...there has to be English subtitles on the Japanese releases, doesn't there? I don't know if I can wait for Criterion, and they probably won't me much cheaper than the imports either.

The Kurosawa releases will not be subtitled in English. And a small corerction, Criterion do not own the rights for RAN, they licensed them from Studio Canal. As did Wellspring before them, etc.

Great News! I can't wait for his TOHO Japan releases of Godzilla. There are soe REALLY great Godzilla films (Mothra, King Kong Verses Godzilla, Ghiddrah The Three Headed Monster, Monster Zero and Destroy All Monsters. I hope these awesome Japanese classics get restored and remixed for Blu-ray.
