The newer games are still direct sequels to the older games. They'll have to go back and start fresh if they're going to care about the material. Hollywood hates video games though, so I doubt we'll ever get an adaptation that gives a crap, and instead we'll continue to get a bunch of random nonsense with the name slapped to it to try and capitalize on the franchises popularity.

I know they are sequels. I just think they will go with the newer content. I can't rmeber the director of 28 days/later but would not mind him doing this.

Like Andersons take on RE and he ended on a high note for me. That said hope this reboot follows the first game close. Always liked the old creepy mansion vibe in it.

I really doubt they will follow the games. These will be like the series that just ended without Mia... there doesn't seem to be a lot of thought into things lately.

Obviously we can't expect the movies "fixed camera" with "tank controls" game look BUT what I'd like to see is a bigger return to "Survival Horror" where less is more where zombies are concerned. In Resident Evil 1 for example, Spencer Mansion has a handful of them just coming to life when 'needed' for that scare moment. Most of the tension comes from having suspense of "where will the next one come from" and a horror aesthetic. Spencer Mansion is ripe for a darker look and dingy horror buy not artificially dark to the point where there isn't anything visible. Obviously moving onto Resident Evil 2, there's gonna be more zombies because it's a city, but the confines of the Police Station and underground sewers area means they could still keep the numbers down and show larger hordes in distance shots.

The movies are going to definitely need action scenes and the trick is to pull them off with as authentic a look as possible whilst looking realistic. Not "Superhuman in a zombie movie" like Milla Jovovich was even when she "lost" her powers. It was ridiculous and absurd. Although maybe that's what helped make so much money and they'll stick to that formula.

That's an interesting pick. I'm also kind of shocked they already have a script.

Milla Jovovich talks about the reboot... and I'm struggling to figure out who she's talking about with that second and third paragraph.

Quote:
“I think a lot of people with these franchises kind of put the cart before the horse. There’s a danger to that. They’ve been wanting to reboot Resident Evil for a long time, and listen: I love the Resident Evil world. I think it’s a great property, I would do it if I was a producer.

I think what made Resident Evil so special is that the people involved really loved what they’re doing and really were fans of the game. I would suggest that you find people that have that same passion for the property before you talk about reboots.

I think if you get into this kind of genre, people are very sensitive to fakes. There’s some real fans in the sci-fi/action/horror world, and they’re not idiots. They can smell when something is done because people love it and when something is done just to monetize an opportunity.”

Danny Boyle, and I don't think he would touch this with a 10 foot pole.
Since they are rebooting this they need a clean slate, start from scratch and have no ties to the other films including all the actors.

Have watched 4 of the current Resident Evil adaptions and wasn't that impressed to be honest (although I did think that the first 2 films were superior). Would definetly welcome a generously budgeted adaption that was much closer to the source material. For the record, I've played through 0, 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

The Milla Jovavich films soon wore out their welcome imo. Time to move on. My fear is that whilst the games were very enjoyable, their scripts could be a bit hokey at times and therefore, wouldn't transition at all well to live action. Will be very interesting to see where they go with this.

btw Only video game film adaption that has impressed me to date is Christophe Gans' and Roger Avary's Silent Hill 1.

I don't get why Resident Evil would be so hard to adapt and make a success Imo. A really tightly polished script, all practical effects and small sets would create a great movie. These idiots in Hollywood just mess everything up by assuming "Hmm, i think it needs more CGI, explosions and action. It tested well and look at the box office for transformers"

I personally think a very character driven survival horror with suitable action scenes would do great. The dogs from the original Resident Evil were great but the problems Imo started with the 2nd movie. The first actually had some great Resident Evil esque moments. They need to go more back to those type of elements but make it even more like the games and better polished.

Yep every thing has to be more more and even more. At some point maybe they will realize less is more. Start slow then build it up and let the more come in at the end.

They make the films the way they do because they succeed.

When it's your money on the line, then you can make them the way you want to.
