What about those that travel and swear by using their smartphone to watch HBO? They might not have a choice.

Smartphones allow people to have more time to watch more things than they did before. I'm pretty sure I could never watch movies or episodes of tv on my train rides or flights before. Now, I can watch more. Smartphones and tablets are great for entertainment, and they do not make people want to watch condensed episodes. They make people want to watch more and more content.
Lmao this thread is bonkers! |

Lol.
I just read the article. There is no mention of this person creating condensed episodes. The AUTHOR OF THE ARTICLE muses that he might have meant that, but in reality he is talking about releasing episodes in multiple parts if anything at all. Season 1 episode 1 part 1 and 2 for example, to make it easier to select where you left off considering mobile viewing habits. Reading comprehension is not difficult. The author on "the verge" does not speak for the guy in charge of content. |

There are ways to deal with it. A 60-minute GOT episode is already broken into numerous scenes. Maybe you arrange 20-minute episodes that focus on an A and B story instead of A-F or however many concurrent stories are happening in an episode. Maybe some end up as parts 1-2-3. That's hardly going to ruin filmmaking. If changing the structure of a few shows for mobile means more revenue for HBO that means more shows and/or better shows. I suspect in the '50s you'd have been talking about how TV would forever ruin movies. Who wants to break up a story into 30 or 60 minutes and have breaks in the middle? TV will be the death of movies!! Except it wasn't, and there are plenty of TV shows better than most movies. There's no mobile apocalypse coming. ![]() |

just look at the trend of the biggest dramas in recent years, most of them tend to be longer than the typical 40 minutes, and are slow paced/slow burners. if length was an issue, you'd see more 20 minutes dramas popping up it sounds like this guy is desperately thinking of an exclusive for AT&T, not to change tv |

I think you're jumping to conclusions again. This is like when that theater chain mentioned that they might allow people to text in some of their movie showings. It was a bad idea that was meant to separate them from the pack. People bashed him, and I'm pretty sure that won't happen now. If this 20 minute episode idea is brought up in a more public forum, it probably won't go over so well. And when the people object to it, they won't go forward with it. They're just trying to figure out how to "innovate" things. Hopefully that's not his best idea. But fret not. So far, you've been worried about quite a lot, and none of those worries have come true. Maybe you're not as good at predicting the future as you think? That's a good thing, because your predictions are pretty negative in general. Even if that 20 minute episode idea does come true, I doubt it would be the only way to view content. It would likely be presented as an alternative. Thank you for being concerned about the future of film and TV, but I think it's going to be okay. So far, so good. |
