I was just joking around, I'm sure she doesn't come here. Thats interesting how your wife knows how to do all of that. I do not mind that my wife doesn't know how, but its mainly because she doesn't need to know how as I do.

Thats very cool how your wife has many different skill sets man!

I would say yes and no. If she uses the Logitech remote and everything turns on then she is ok but if one device does not turn on or switch to the right setting then forget it.

I hate when i get the call on my cell that there is something wrong with the TV and then i have to explain over the phone how to fix the problem but her primative mind just does not get it.

I would have to say No to all.
I have a dedicated player (Her Player) hooked up straight to the Tv so she could watch her movies any time she wants. I Even renamed the TV's Input after her so she knows she on the right input. She may not be HT inclined but she can cook like a pro.

there are generally only 3 basic things you need to know for mine (2 power buttons and a HDMI switcher which is always on) and she still can't get it

but i think it's because she's afraid of messing something up

Alas, I have not yet met my soulmate, but after reading this thread, this will definitely be a pre-marriage ritual.

If she can't even sit down and humor me a bit on this one, I'm moving on.

Im English from the UK. I did a 6 year stint with my ex in the USA and the most common thing I heard from her family was "can you hook it up?"

I'd never heard of such a statement here in the UK. But in the States apparently everything gets hooked up!

The girl I was seeing in Orlando was very knowledgeable when it came to my home theater, so my answers are:

1. Yes. Once I got back from a trip to Atlanta and when I got to my place she was watching a Blu-ray she gave me.

2. No. She would be happy with just plugging in the player to the TV.

3. No. She wouldn't care as long as she got some sound out of the TV.

4. No. If everything was unplugged she wouldn't know how to plug everything back in, but she would manage to hook up the player to the TV and watch movies.

1. Operate your HT equipment without you? You know........ turn everything on and be able to get both video and audio from the device she wanted?

Yes! I have trained her well, soon she will be a HD Jedi

2. If they had to remove everything from the room to paint or redo floors.... would they be able to put everything back together and STILL get to both the audio and video from the device she wanted?

No, she would paint behind there with everything still plugged in. I'm not kidding...

3. Would they be able to tweak the settings to make them sound almost as good as you do, or would they even care as long as it worked?

Nope

4. Would they even know how to find out without resorting to the Geek Squad?

Nope

Hmmm... I'd say:
1: Yes she can operate it
2: Maybe. I have a hard enough time with it I resorted to labeling everything so she might be able to
3: Doubtful, she notices the differences and would try to tweak things but would probably resort to the settings they are at
4: Probably, she does IT stuff, so she can probably figure it out. Besides, we are planning to get one of those TV calibrators (not the disc kind) but had it professionally calibrated last year. I know it is suppose to be calibrated every year, but I am afraid if I change anything, it will not look as good. And I don't want to spend that kind of money every year. When I move, I will get one of those calibrators, so she would probably get one of those.

On the other hand... with my dad:
1: No, he has a hard time figuring out his own system, though he does try
2: No way. He calls me up to do all his set up.
3: He wouldn't care, and would have no clue
4: He'd call me or Geek Squad.

My mom is worse, I don't think she even knows what Geek Squad is. She has him turn things on for her...

Anyone can operate my home theater thanks to my Harmony remote. Even when my Dad comes over he says he has an easier time using my gear than he does with his TV/DVD player at home.

My wife could probably operate my gear even without the Harmony, but I think she wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of it all. I can see her being like "screw it... I'm going to go watch TV in the bedroom."

No x4

I typed up instructions on how to watch movies (involves switching inputs on TV and receiver) for when she gets the rare item she put in my Netflix queue (like Sex and the City or some garbage like that) and she lost them.

She thinks it is rediculous to have an explosion sound loud (she'll actually cover her ears).

God forbid I spend any more money on my HT (which I really do need to in order to upgrade from a 5 yr old receiver and Sony speaker set)

Both my wife and my 4 year old daughter can operate the HT to watch movies and tv. I have a cheapie Sony Universal remote (I am afraid to pony up for a better one while my kid goes through her "oops" phase) that actually works pretty well.

There is NO way she'd ever be able to hook it up or anything like that however. She's not technically inclined at ALL. She also wouldn't worry about lossless audio, though I can tell she does get enjoyment from it.

Here are my serious answers:
1. Operate your HT equipment without you? You know........ turn everything on and be able to get both video and audio from the device she wanted?
Yes as I've been gone and she can operate it just fine.

2. If they had to remove everything from the room to paint or redo floors.... would they be able to put everything back together and STILL get to both the audio and video from the device she wanted?
Yes because I've clearly labeled all my wires and cables.

3. Would they be able to tweak the settings to make them sound almost as good as you do, or would they even care as long as it worked?
The actual setup its quite simple with my system as she would just need to plug in the calibration microphone. If she has an issue, she would just read the manual.

4. Would they even know how to find out without resorting to the Geek Squad?
Yes as my wife knows better to pay someone else to do something she can do herself.

Not surprising considering my wife hasn't even seen our home-theater turned "on" before let-alone watched a movie on it, or tried to operate it herself!!!!!!

She doesn't even like to watch movies with you? My wife doesn't understand how it all works, but she loves to watch the movies and anxiously awaits new releases. We watched Wanted last night.

I hope you guys have other stuff in common......... LOL
