Default Killzone 2 only uses 60% of the PS3's SPU's

Quote:
Speaking in IGN's latest Play Beyond podcast, Jeff Haynes revealed that even during the heaviest loads, Killzone 2 utilizes roughly only 60 per cent of the SPU's.

"It's incredible to see huge levels and see the deferred rendering and note that on all the SPU's, even on the heaviest load were coming up to about 60%," Haynes said. "They weren't coming close to maxing out. .They had about 40% of space before they started tripping or saw slow down on some of the processes."

Furthermore, Haynes noted that the preview codes recently distributed to various media outlets were of an alpha build of the title, and have since been polished up . Visiting Guerilla Games in Amsterdam, Haynes was shown an updated version of the game, mid to late beta, noting that elements such as lighting, cut scenes, glitches, load times, have all been optimized.

Killzone 2 is due out exclusively on PlayStation 3 on February 27, 2009.

I read that they were using 6 SPUs at 60% each, I think the Cell has 7 usable SPU and 1 is reserved.

Either way I think Uncharted 2, GoW 3 and GT5 will look at least as good as Killzone 2.

I read that myself earlier on. Just think, we want to know what Metal Gear 5 would look like. Also, with figures like that, it should be possible (in therory, if they are able to port it) to get Crysis onto the console. Doubt that would ever happen though, its been long ago.

That was rumored to come out in 2009.

Yeah, but still, its only ever true if the company announced it.

Wonder if they've managed to get the CryEngine2 onto the console, I remember months ago that they were getting it done.

60 percent is probably more of an average top-end. They should always keep some performance in the tank because in a game like K2 you can't exactly predict how much is going to go off on-screen at once, especially in multiplayer.

But in future years they'll get more comfortable with their tech, push that average closer to 80-90% and in addition there's always more efficient ways of coding, spreading the load, achieving special effects, culling what the player can't see and so on. It's easy to forget that percentage applies to their current game engine, not overall PS3 potential.

After seeing how Killzone 2 looks and more than hold its own against Crysis, I think a port is very possible, maybe it won't run as good as high end PC on max, but it'll run very well if they can optimize their engine on the PS3.

The original Cell processor design from IBM calls for 8 SPUs, but the PS3's has one disabled to improve production reliability.

Of the remaining 7 SPUs available to the PS3, 1 is reserved for the system, with the option of a 2nd that the system may requisition at any time, so game developers really have to operate within 5 SPUs, with only light non-essential work going on the 6th if they want to use it at all.

Latest dev builds give the 6th SPU to game mode completely. It seems the OS has been optimised enough to only require a single SPU and significantly less RAM than the initial 64MB.

I think it stands at 1SPU and 28MB RAM down from 1.5SPUs and 64MB RAM, and now we get in-game XMB.

Do you know if the 512M ram is split evenly between the program and the GPU or if it can be allocated as needed? I have a friend who's in GAP who says the program can use as much as it needs but I thought 256 was allocated to the GPU whether it needed it or not.

I don't know much about SPU's or memory or anything like that, but I was playing Disgaea 3 last weekend and during a busy sequence I killed 4 or 5 people and had several gain a level and the PS3 actually slowed for a second to calculate it all. It was very short and minor but it was noticable. I have not noticed this with any other game and I thought it was odd since Disgaea 3 uses some relatively "tame" graphics when compared to games like Uncharted etc.

Architecturally, the memory of the PS3 is split at the hardware level. 256MB of main memory, 256MB of GPU memory.

Yep! I believe they are using the hard drive for virtual memory in order to drop the OS footprint to VERY low levels.

Last I saw, the OS was at 48MB. I'm glad it's down to 28MB. That's lower than X360's 32MB OS, now!

That sounds like badly written code for Disgaea 3 to me.
