I guess it depends on which bars. For BD/DVD/HD movies, then the bars MUST stay as that was how the director meant for the picture to look. For SD cable, however, I prefer to fill the screen. If I'm watching HD cable, and a 4:3 show comes on (Simpsons, Family Guy, etc.), I'll leave it pillar-boxed, simply because I hate changing the aspect ratio on my set.

i really hate them black bars, taken up space on my tv screen
surley with todays technology we can remove them while keeping the original picture ratio or whatever i mean i understand them for people who dont have Wide screen tvs as they picture gets croped in full screen but i have a big ol wide screen tv, why do i need them a sulotuion surley can be foud |

Film is art, anyone who doesn't have respect for the director's intended vision of the film is just disrespecting these true artists. They film them in the certain ratios for a reason, it is the way the director intends for the film to be watched.

Because a theater screen is CIH (constant image height), meaning the height of the image projected is always the same. The width will vary based on the aspect ratio the movie is presented in. Next time, watch the curtains open up after the credits/ads to allow the image to be wider. This same concept is used by some folks who have projector setups, but it costs quite a bit more than a standard setup.
