Default How good is upscaling

I own over 900 DVD's so i only want to replace my fav films. Noticed that some blu ray players upscale.

Does this really make alot of difference.

Short answer: YES!

Not so short answer: it depends.

There are some DVDs that look really excellent for SD (especially when they're shot on video), so the difference is not as huge compared to the BD. But the difference IS there. For a 'normal' DVD the upgrade to BD is simply phenomenal

Of course you need a 1080P display to really appreciate the PQ and don't sit more than 1.5 to 2 times your picture width away from it.

Some people say yes, To be honest, I don't really see much of a difference. I guess it ultimately is up to the individual viewer.

of course I can't really stand to watch standard DVD's anymore, I have been spoiled by Blu-Ray. I only buy High Definition media now, I don't even remember the last time I watched a SD DVD, well at my own house anyway.

Ah, I think I misunderstood you there. You were asking if upscaling in the BD player is better than letting the TV handle it? In that case it depends on the TV and the BD player. The new Samsung coming out has the HQV chip from Silicon Optix. My Denon has the same chip used for deinterlacing and scaling and the result is really good. I would say it's hard for a TV to deinterlace as well as the HQV.

I have tried several SD disks on a PS3 with the latest software updates. Connecting via HDMI to a 52" Mitsubishi DLP at 720P I can see a differnce. It is suttle, but once you watched for awhile, it is addicting. The differnce may be HDMI as I suspect the Mitsu does a pretty good job upscaling, but there is a differnce that I believe is worth paying for.

If you can, get your BD-300/301 or PS3 at Costco. There return/customer sat policy can not be beat (90 days and no questins asked). Plenty of time for you to decide if it was money well spent.

I bought a Denon, I believe 1930CI, something like that, upconverting DVD player, and thought it made my DVD's look worse on my Samsung 1080p DLP. The PS3 is another story. The Spiderman 2 superbit looks better than some of the lower quality BD's I've seen out there.

IMHO upconverting makes a difference, but not satisfying. I'm spoiled by BD too. Gettysburg, Battle of Britain just not very sharp upconverted, but PQ of Ten Commandments actually was pretty impressive. (Sony BDP-S1 and 46" XBR2-- HDMI cables)

Upscaling is better than standard DVD. However, like everyone has said, once you see BD, you don't want to go back to standard DVD.

The Denon 3930CI with the HQV upscaling chipset is probably the best upscaling DVD player out there. It outperforms the PS3 in upscaling DVDs with the 1.8x firmware. It also passes all the benchmarks for deinterlacing. Only problem is that it costs $1500 and quality is suspect, surprising for a Denon product.
