Arrow July 2017 Movie Challenge: Summer Movies

1. July Featured Theme: Summer Movies!* (5 movies)
* 5 movies that can be a mixed bag between past and/or current blockbusters, summer vacation flicks, family camping trip movies, etc. or simply films you loved or grew up watching in the summertime.

2. July Recommendations Category: Misunderstood Films* (5 movies)
* 5 movies you haven't seen before from the titles recommended by other members. In your initial tracking post, everyone put a list of at least 5 "critically or universally disliked aka bad" movies that you feel get a bad rep and you think others may not have seen and may enjoy. Then for the ones you watch for this category, mention who recommended the film in your post. You may use lower scores from IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes as a guideline of sorts, but you are by no means obligated to. As long as you have a general understanding of what qualifies as a "considered bad" film that you happen to enjoy ie. Star Wars prequels or Jupiter Ascending, and not The Dark Knight Rises or La La Land.

3. Create-Your-Own! The rest of your movies for the month can be categorized however you please! No limit on number of categories or movies per category for that matter. Suggestions include genres, directors, actors, studios, writers, etc.
___________________________________

The Usual Fine Print:
  • 50 movies is the goal, but based on your own time and situation you can shoot for more or less, so we have different levels from Coal to Platinum:
    60 Movies - Platinum
    50 Movies - Gold
    40 Movies - Silver
    30 Movies - Bronze
    20 Movies - Copper
    10 Movies - Coal
  • If you're going to re-post your entire list every time, please hide it under spoiler tags.
  • If you're going to post pictures for the films (poster art or Blu-ray covers, for example) please try not to use GIANT pictures, and if there are tons of them, again - please hide under spoilers.

I apologize in advance for some of these.

Antz: I've loved this one since I was a kid. It came out the same year as Pixar's A Bug's Life and got a bit swept under the rug as a result. It definitely has more adult-oriented themes and humor than the more-popular alternative, but I've always preferred this one. How is this not on blu? (2.8/5 Letterboxd)

Bringing Down the House: Pretty ridiculous premise and some low-brow jokes, but it's got some very funny character interactions and a decent story. (2.3/5 Letterboxd)

Eagle Eye: High-concept action thriller film dealing with some pretty interesting "big brother" themes. (2.7/5 Letterboxd)

The Invasion: It doesn't really bring anything new to the alien invasion genre, but I've always found it to be a highly satisfying sci-fi thriller. (2.5/5 Letterboxd)

The Jacket: Very unique, dark psychological thriller that I used to love as a teenager. Definitely deserves a blu release. (3.1/5 Letterboxd)

Lucy: I think a lot of people view this one as kind of a pretentious rip-off of Limitless (which I also love and would recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it), but I really enjoy this one. Interesting story, fun action, and it gets you thinking beyond the scope of the movie. (2.8/5 Letterboxd)

R.I.P.D.: This one is silly, but it's pure sci-fi fun. (2.1/5 Letterboxd)

Taxi: Another silly comedy, but it's pretty fun if you like Queen Latifah and/or Jimmy Fallon. (1.9/5 Letterboxd)

Treasure Planet: Fantastic retelling of Treasure Island. Very cool premise-twists and great-looking animation. This is a severely underrated Disney gem. (3.4/5 Letterboxd)

Twister: This may technically be a blockbuster, but it seems like the love for this one has waned quite a bit over the last decade. It was one of my first favorite non-kid's movies and still holds a special place in my heart despite the cheesiness. (2.9/5 Letterboxd)

White Chicks: Incredibly ridiculous premise, low-brow, and stupid-funny humor but man this one really brings me back. I can't help but enjoy it. It's not even a guilty pleasure for me... it's just a pleasure. (2.5/5 Letterboxd)

Whiteout: Tight little mystery thriller. Some plot holes and cheesy characters, but still very enjoyable. (2.3/5 Letterboxd)

1. She's All That: One of my favorite teen movies, it is one of the best examples of the teen movie trope of "girl takes off glasses and is suddenly seen as gorgeous." Although personally I prefer Rachel Leigh Cook before she took off the glasses, but that's just my type. I was honestly astonished to see how few people actually like it. While it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, it's super fun and way better than most regard it as being. (RT: Critics: 38%, Audience: 55%)

2. Love and Other Drugs: Another film I'm confused about dislike about. It's definitely got a weird combination of stories (romance mixed with pharmaceutical exposé) but I think it handled the two very well. (RT: Critics: 49%, Audience: 53%)

3. Drop Dead Gorgeous: One of my favorite cult films, and a wonderful black comedy. Two wildly different areas (a beauty pageant and a murder mystery) come crashing together in a wonderfully hilarious package. This films has some hilarious performances from great comedic actresses (and a small appearance by a young Amy Adams). (RT: Critics: 44%, Audience: 75%)

4. The Bling Ring: One of Sofia Coppola's more undervalued films, this movie has what I think is Emma Watson's best performance. Seeing it for the first time shortly after the end of the Harry Potter series (a staple of my childhood) was something akin to a culture shock. (RT: Critics: 60%, Audience: 33%)

5. St. Elmo's Fire: One of the quintessential Brat Pack films, in my opinion. This has almost every big Brat Pack actor of the time, and it's cheesy fun. While some of the story lines are a bit contrived and even downright creepy (looking at you, Emilio Estevez), it's still a damn good time! (RT: Critics: 48%, Audience: 68%)

6. Space Jam: Jordan and Bugs lead a group of cartoon characters (and Bill Murray) to fight a group of intergalactic baddies. Cheesy 90s fun, and almost everyone, whether or not they've seen it, know about this movie one way or another. And, while not the world's greatest movie, it's goofy and fun and there are definitely worse ways to spend an hour and a half. (RT: Critics: 37%, Audience: 63%)

7. Joe Versus the Volcano: Meg Ryan fresh from When Harry Met Sally and Hanks just after Big and The 'Burbs, this movie has two of America's loveliest actors in a romantic comedy a few years before Sleepless in Seattle, and a little more zany than that film as well. Meg Ryan owns this movie in my opinion, acting in three different roles (and her performance as Angelica will always live in my heart), but the two of them have such wonderful chemistry together (and don't get me started on Tom Hanks' dancing skills. The man can move.). (RT: Critics: 62%, Audience: 54%)

8. Ghostbusters (2016): Do not go into this movie expecting either total garbage or the greatest comedy ever, because both would have you disappointed. This movie did not deserve the controversy. I totally realize it's not for everyone, but, hey! Comedy is subjective! And this movie totally won me over, but it had an easier time with me than others, because I am both a huge SNL fan and I've loved every Feig/McCarthy movie before it. Just go in expecting a decent-to-good comedy, and you'll probably have your expectations met. (RT: Critics: 73%, Audience: 53%)

9. Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk: Another film from last year I found to be unfairly maligned. If you've read the novel this is based on, I would advise going into this not expecting the same tone. The novel is a satire, while the film is a straight drama. It does have some good performances, the standouts being Kristen Stewart, whom I generally really like in everything, and the wonderful film debut of Joe Alwyn, who is quite good in a film which is not only his first, but is rested squarely on his shoulders. (RT: Critics: 45%, Audience: 43%)

10. Cool as Ice: This movie is total garbage. But it's also quite fascinating. I found myself watching it and thinking "how did anyone think this was a good idea" at most of the decisions made. This film was made during that hot second when Vanilla Ice was, like, a thing, so I believe that maybe the country was in a temporary state of insanity (I do love Ice Ice Baby though. No shame.). Also, some of the cinematography was nice, considering it was done by Janusz Kamiński (yeah, that Janusz Kamiński). (RT: Critics: 8%, Audience: 42%)

Recommendations:

Halloween II (2009) - The most misunderstood movie of all time, man. Take yourself out of the "Halloween" and "slasher movie" mindset and watch it for what it is: a character study on Michael Myers and Laurie Strode after the events of the first film. I am unapologetic in my love for this sequel.
American Mary (2012) - I can't say enough good things about this movie, I think it's pretty amazing. It's misunderstood in the sense that I don't see it ever being held in the high regard I think it deserves to be.
Topaz (1969) - I truly believe that if Alfred Hitchcock got some big name actors to star in this movie instead of unknowns that people would hold it in much higher regard than they do.
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) - I thought this was a decent little movie that got a bad rap because of it being a forced sequel, on top of studio interference which hurt it. Taking it on its own without comparing it to the first film I think it has an interesting story and fun characters.
Disaster Movie (2008) - One of my favorite "so bad, it's good" movies ever. The jokes in it are so unfunny that it eventually becomes hilarious. You're laughing not at the jokes themselves, but at the idea that the filmmakers thought that they were funny. People should love this the same way they love Troll 2 or The Room.

Recommendations

All the recommended except for one, scored below 40% and some much lower on Rotten Tomatoes. I included Bringing Up Baby because though it's highly rated today, it bombed when it was released and Katharine Hepburn was considered box office poison as a result.
Bringing up Baby is in my top ten while the others except for Pandorum which I love, are more guilty pleasures.

My Recommendations:

Torque is my only "so bad, it's good" selection. I love this flick. It is the ultimate guilty pleasure. Is it just Fast & Furious on motorcycles? Of course it is. But it also knows exactly what it is and doesn't take itself seriously for even a single minute. It's cheesy, it's over-the-top, and it's an unintentionally hilarious blast (and the director has a serious obsession with mirror/reflection shots. Seriously, make it a drinking game and you'll be in the ER for alcohol poisoning).

* I had RIPD listed, but someone else already listed it, so I second that recommendation!
* I also almost listed Oscar, which I love, but I already recommended that a few months ago in our first recommendation month

Lot of interesting ones there that I haven't seen. For the longest time I mainly stuck to Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror, Thrillers and Classics. I just started branching out to War movies in the last couple of years. Mainly avoided comedies unless from years ago or had older stars that I enjoyed. Still haven't developed a love for Westerns and I don't know why. But it's nice being taken out of your comfort zone and watch genres you're not too familiar with. There is so many I've not seen listed so far. I just hope some of them are easily accessible.

5 Recommended Misunderstood Films:

[Show spoiler]All 5 of my recommended misunderstood films are rated right around 6 stars on this site's rating scale. I consider that to be just an average movie and maybe not worth watching twice. I think these few should be rated just a little higher as I liked them enough to add them to my collection.

5.6 A lot of people hate the Poltergeist remake but I don't. It's not as good as the original but is still a fun ride and I love the little kid and his reactions to seeing everything and no one believing him.

5.9 Alien Vs Predator is done in the style of classic Frankenstein Vs The Mummy or Frankenstein meets The Wolf Man. This is a great popcorn movie that gives us two great modern monsters fighting it out in a pyramid buried under Antarctica. What's not to like?

6.1 Roland Emmerich is the master of disaster and I love 2012 right along with all his other great disaster movies. This is another great popcorn movie that follows John Cusack and his family as they just barely escape, outrun, and overcome danger again and again.

6.1 The Campaign is becoming an election time tradition for me. I don't always like comedies enough to watch them more than once but I love Will Ferrell and Zach G here.

6.1 I skipped Jurassic Park 3 until I found the Blu-ray cheap and have enjoyed it ever since. It isn't as good as the others but it's still good. Just 90 minutes leaves me wanting more.

Still haven't developed a love for Westerns and I don't know why. But it's nice being taken out of your comfort zone and watch genres you're not too familiar with. There is so many I've not seen listed so far. I just hope some of them are easily accessible.
Thanks!

With horror and comedy, I pretty much write off anything made after 1990. Thinking of removing Cabin in the Woods and Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Was surprised the Rotten Tomatoes score was so high. I guess I'll save them for October. They sure aren't hated.

I know it wasn't a box office success, but it is loved by the vast majority:
RT: 96% audience score (79% critic)
IMDb: 8.8/10 and #10 on all-time top rated list
One of my top 5 movies of all time

but then, any chance to recommend it to someone who hasn't seen it yet (what is wrong with them?!?) is good I guess.

I think they took the word "misunderstood" quite literally with this recommendation.
