Default Receiver recommendation Please

I have a Yamaha RX-V 995 digital receiver.
http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...1&CTID=5000300
Obsolete now. 1999 Receiver

If i get a Panasonic DMP-BD55k Blue Ray player should I get a new receiver?

I have a Toshiba 46" HDTV and HD DirecTV.

Whats a great receiver to get for a good budget?

I wouldn't say you "have" to replace your receiver....but it would make life much easier.

HDMI connections simplify so much.

Do you NEED to get a new receiver with that particular player? No. You can use the discrete inputs to receive HD audio with the player doing the decoding.

If you want to update, as crackinhedz says, HDMI makes the connections simpler, you could look at the Pioneer VSX-1018.

My receiver does not have the latest and greatest audio modes. It does not have HDMI connections. Is it possible if i get the Blue ray player I mention above? I would appreciate any advice. I am new to all of this.

Definitely get a new receiver. The Pioneer recommended is an excellent choice. Its HERE on Newegg for $429.99 with free shipping.

Dude, for a budget of $600 go and get the Denon AVR1909CI...There is nothing that even comes close to how it performs against the other receivers I've installed in the same price range...ie Yamaha RXV663, Onkyo TXSR606...In fact, at my store, we've had something like 900 Onkyo 606's come back for HDMI failure between the store front and the website.

Well, both of those receivers are like half the cost, so of course the Denon is a better receiver. Personally, I've had no problems with my Onkyo 605 which I've had for about a year, and I've never heard of that many problems from the 606 either. Anyway, I would still suggest the Pioneer receiver...great price and a terrific receiver.

With the player you previously mentioned, The Panasonic DMP-BD55, you do not need to update your reciever. The player will decode all hd audio codecs and send them to the player via analog outputs. Because of the age of your reciever you will be limited to 5.1 channels. If you plan to upgrade to a 7.1 set-up than I would suggest looking at new recievers otherwise, you would not see an immediate auditory benefit. As mentioned previously, upgrading to an hmdi capable receiver would simplify the connections between your devices.

Is that a fact? Which store is that? Guinness should be called, I reckon that's a new world record for a single store.

If you're getting the DMP-BD55 why don't you order three pairs of these first and hook up the analog outputs. Isn't it worth spending $15 before you decide if you want to spend $600? The analog output section of the DMP-BD55 is a very nice player.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

$3.21/each x 3 pairs = $9.63+shipping.

Alternately if you're going to upgrade your receiver you might as well just pick up the DMP-BD35 - the only difference is a digital coaxial output which you wouldn't use anyway with HDMI and analog multi-channel outputs.

Just use the analog outputs. That's what I'll be doing with my Sony S550 when it arrives tomorrow.

Default Similar Setup

I have a Yamaha DSP-A1 and recently puchased a Pansonic DMP-BD55. I connected the BD55 to the DSP-A1 via the analog connections and it sounds great. I checked your recevier and on page 21 of your user manual, it shows how to connect the BD55 to your receiver via the analog connections. Try this first and see how the audio sounds.

Though I think the audio quality is great, I do not know how it would compare to a new recevier and having all of the components connected via HDMI. I am also debating this as well and going back and forth if I should get a new receiver as well.

I had a older Pionner receiver w/h no hdmi and I got the VSX-918V(audio,video, and 1080P/24 passthrough). Two hdmi outputs and 5.1 works for me and if I want more in the future I can just sell it because it did not cost that much anyway.

Setup
Panasonic BD-35
Pionner VSX-918V
Mitsubishi WD-60735
DirecTV HR21-100 (HD DVR)

I doubt there'd be much of a difference. Use the analog outs! Save yourself some money until there's a bigger reason to upgrade.

Thats awesome that the blue ray player will decode all hd audio codec to the receiver. Willi get lossless audio too?

How will i know which HD audio its using. I am sure it will not display it on the old receiver right?

Yes, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are both lossless and PCM is uncompressed.

To tell which track is running you would need to check on the player as it would not display on the receiver.

There would assumably be a display button on the player/remote. I'm not sure that all players have it, but the PS3 you can see the codec, bitrate and running time. Might want to double-check your player's manual to see if it has something like that.
