Yes and no.

Most of the launch PS3 titles are in 720p, 30 or 60 fps, although the system can do 1080p, and a couple of demos were shown in 1080p at the recent E3. Gran Turismo HD was one of them, War Devil was another.

It's a case of "We could do it, but why waste all that fillrate".

So your saying 1080p60fps is possible, depends on the devs (as usual)?

Yeah, kinda. 1080p gaming requires a lot more resources than 720p gaming, so developers are thinking: "Why bother when nobody has a 1080p TV".

Less room for textures, meshes, more bandwidth required for less payback. But the FMV cutscenes in games can be 1080p without any problems. All the games are on Blu Ray.

To be honest, even getting 720p at 4xFSAA can be a strain for next gen consoles, at least we know PS3 can do that. Here's Warhawk doing it.

I reckon this is one of those areas that will change as time goes by, generally the graphics on a console get better as developers get the hang of it. I think this time round, in addition to the graphics getting better, developers will also find ways to keep high frame rates at high resolutions, so while games at launch will typically be 720p; in a couple of years they may all offer 1080p as well with no slow down but better image (if your set supports it)

It won't be long though before 1080p is available on all new HD tv's and, all being well, the PS3 will be there to supply content for that resolution - movies too.
