How broken is this list? Wheres MGS4? Surely thats top ten worthy. An iPod Touch game and a flash game on the list? The Forch Unleashed? That wasn't even that good. I pretty much expected GTA IV to be on top (as predicted, like every other top ten list this year. It was just a major disapointment in my books, but then again I'm not the one complaining what everyone else has done). This is why news magazines should not do game of the year lists. Sorry for the major rant, just share your thoughts on this.

I just read this list a few minutes ago and don't get me started.

With the exception of LBP, it seems like a list for Most Overrated Games of 2008. Having Spore in the Top 10 makes it lose all of its credibility before you work your way up to the undeserving #1 spot.

EDIT: Spore sucks. It's absolutely the most boring and mind-numbing hand-holding game I've played in a long time. Spore is worse than the DRM it has that EA transferred onto your PC like a bad case of the clap.

classic example of a magazine covering a subject they have no expertise in.

another atrocity is that super smash bros. brawl is not on this list. i know there are a lot of wii haters on this thread, but that game HAS to be on a top 10 list for 2008. as does MGS4.

this list is laughable at best. i wonder how much lucas paid time to put his game on there...

I have to agree with you there. I never even thought about Brawl. That would have to be at least the Wii game of the year, if not the top 10 overall. Just leave the top 10's to who should do them in the first place, the gamers.

It seems like it is a hybrid list between games that over achieved (dead space) games that delivered (LBP), games that were hyped (GTAIV) and Games that the average Time reader would play (any iPod/flash game).

Honestly, given the people who put the list together, it is damn good IMO.

Remember, they are writing it for their audience, not some gaming audience. Coming up with just 10 games this year for that kind of group is hard, and I think it is great that Dead Space (One of the few games this year that really smashed expectations), LBP (being a unique game) and the fact that they did not bow down to the Wii deserves credit.

1.GTAIV might be the second most overrated game (after Halo) of all time. Fun, but not epic. Just volume and cost put this one in the top spot...fair enough.
2.Cant comment on 360 games
3.Epic in a non-traditional way
4.both 1 and 2 together rate a top 5 spot given how they took that genre and crushed it.
5.Cant comment on 360 games
6.Dead Space one of the best games of the past several years.
7.Horrible game. Wrecked the whole list.
8.Never heard of it
9.never heard of it
10.not impressed.

I'm not an Xbox person, so maybe I'm just out of it, but what the heck is Braid, and why is it so high when MGS4 isn't on there? Someone needs to write Time and tell they're idiots to leave MGS4 off the top 3 (#1 really). I mean GTA4, really? That's like the "I know nothing about videogames" choice for number one, because everyone's heard of it. Pathetic.

To be fair, the first Halo was incredible. The next two were extremely overrated. But I pretty much agree with you.

Braid had 360 reviewers saying it was the most creative platformer since Mario but it was overpriced, short, and never had the replayability for such a bold and preposterous claim to be made.

I've never seen so much bull$hit in such a tight space before. I hate GTAIV. It was soooooo boring. Other than LBP and SW, that is the only game on that list that I've played and if I can expect that kind of crap from lower list numbers, than forget about it.

MGS4 absolutely deserves to be on that list, no question. An extremely strong case can be made for R2 as well.

IPOD and Flash games? Force unleashed? Seriously?

Oh and GTA4 is closely approaching the most over rated game of all time territory. I guarantee in 1-2 years people will stop and realize it really wasnt very good. Its like MGS2. Rave reviews at first, but after the original wow factor left, you realize it really was a crap game.

Its really obvious this list is really just "Top 10 games most hyped by the media" with little attention paid to actual game quality for some of these

I wonder how many of those reviews recieved a "complimentary" copy of GTA IV.

This is very analagous to the election proces. The winner is the one with the most hype generated and the most money/media exposure.

EDIT: This is why good games like Uncharted will never win these contests and good candidates like Ron Paul never make it past the primaries.
