Hello everyone, I want to buy a Sony STR-DG920 receiver but first I have a question. I apologize if this has already been asked and answered. Couldn't find anything in search.
I currently own a Sony STR-DG800. If I were to connect a component(S) via HDMI to the receiver and HDMI to the tv the sound will only come from the tvs' speakers. So, right now I have everything hooked up to the tv with HDMI for video and optical to the receiver for sound. I want to upgrade to the 920 because I now have a PS3. Will I be able to hook up my PS3 and HD cable box to the 920 with HDMI to the receiver and tv and have the sound come from the surround sound speakers not the tv? By the way if anyone can suggest a better receiver than the 920, please let me know. I have a $400-$500 budget. I want it to decode Dolby TruHD and DTS-Master audio. I researched this and I always came back to the 920. Overall it gets pretty good reviews. Thanks for your help. Luis Last edited by jblfx; 12-10-2008 at 02:16 PM. |

Luis, when you plug into the 920 via HDMI you will get audio through the receiver. All Sony receivers work this way from the 720 up through the ES series.
I looked into the 4 major receivers in your price range that most people are going to suggest which will be Onkyo 606, Yamaha 663, and the Pioneer 1018. Of them all the Pioneer was my favorite, only I didn't have that large of a space for it. The Sony and Onkyo pretty much sounded the same, the Yammy was nice only I had read reviews that it lost power on the top end, which is ok for small rooms, but mid to large not so well. I have a mid sized livingroom. The Onkyo was nice, but the Sony I liked better because of the onscreen GUI, Upscaling to 1080p, and the overall familiarity, and the sound was excellent. Now that I have the Sony 920, it is an excellent machine, works very well, easy to set up, Loud, clean, distortion free, sound great at low volumes and high volumes. I couldn't be happier then I am with this receiver. I would recommend this to anyone. Last edited by callas01; 12-10-2008 at 04:17 PM. |
