So this a thread to mention BD discs that start playing the feature after loading the disc in the player. Perhaps some studios do this for all or most of their BDs...
So the one I want to start with is WB's Blade Runner - The Final Cut. I like for a movie to do that. Just load it and play vs. The 40th Anniv. of Planet of the Apes, that makes you sit through an animated ape introduction. Or previews, or Video theft PSA. I hate having to go through a Menu, when all I want to do is watch the film. Most BD menus have spoilers. I know I've seen the movie before, but please don't shove any spoilers in my face! Who tested that with BD users to figure out that's what the public wanted and needed!! Of course, for BDs that have more than one version on the disc, they'd almost have to give the option of which version you want to watch. |

I definitely prefer when discs do this, though some complain because they either don't expect it to start so soon or the discs default to the wrong audio track. I know Batman has both regular Dolby Digital and TrueHD tracks, and defaults to, you guessed it, Dolby Digital. Newer titles don't have the standard track though so apparently the TrueHD is still backwards-compatible for those without real sound systems. If every movie just defaulted to the best-quality audio track in the native language with no subtitles, then that'd be perfect. Another reason why I still love laserdiscs.

WB was notorious for this for a few years with their early releases. The problem with that though is that they were also notorious for having the disc default to lossy audio playback. So, like the film starting as soon as the disc loads all you want, but don't forget to load the pop-up menu and check your audio settings EVERY TIME you load one of those discs. In that regard, you will have to deal with menus anyways. :shrugs:
I prefer a load-up menu for this exact reason. It's a consistent and solid reminder to check audio settings before playback begins. Also, if my wife is watching with me, it also gives me time to turn subtitles on before the film starts instead of dealing with menus while the film has started. She is Japanese and English is her 2nd language. She doesn't pick up on a good chunk of spoken dialogue because it is often spoken so fast. |

Then unless the studio wants to force you to watch a preview, or pirate warning BEFORE watching the movie, you're good to go. Then the only time you'd have to go to the menu, is to opt in for a commentary track, or, some other feature the studio dreams up. |

I think it is good for some to go to preview or menu. I use subtitles since I am hard of hearing. Besides u can always fast forward or even skip to next preview every time a new preview pops up until the menu comes up.

When I pop a disc into my player I'm not always ready to watch the film so having it begin playing automatically doesn't suit me. Besides, I don't like control taken away from my viewing habits - I already have to endure forced advertising and other junk from television networks and now movie theaters. Controlling when a film starts to play may be one of the last benefits consumers have.

Pretty sure I"ve seen some Universal discs do this too.
I think it pretty much means there is no "top menu", only a pop-up menu. Typically that also means they went on the cheap and made a barebones disc. I'm not a fan. I want a menu, even if just a simple one. Although Warner's "simple ones" are also some of the ugliest. So I guess i can't win. |

I am more use to the delays, and, having to start through a menu. That's what started me on this thread. I loaded up Blade Runner, but hadn't turned on the receiver, or selected the flatsrceen input of the BD Player yet, so when I got there, the opening had already started playing.... |

When I ripped these I ripped the TrueHD track only for the main audio track. I also make sure to change the track to lossless when I use the disc. There are certain titles where you have to manually change it to lossless. Ratatouille is another example.

The unrated BD of "Dead Silence" does that, and replays automatically when over. I always wished DVD, and now BD, would do that like a CD. I remember in the early days of DVD people on forums such as these would judge if a DVD was good or bad by its ridiculous menu. Animated menus were becoming so elaborate it seemed to take a minute just to reach the highlighted "play" text. That was the main reason I used to burn a copy on a blank without the menu.
