Default Let's discuss characters created by the Coen Bros.

__________________________________________________

The Coen Bros. have created some of the most unique film characters over the years and I'm curious as to which Characters are your favorites?

Why? What specific reasons behind liking a particular character?

Indiewire ranked them all in 2016.

http://www.indiewire.com/2016/02/ran...racters-83984/

Thoughts about their list?

I've always been partial to "The Dude" and Ulysses Everett McGill (O Brother). I really like the humor of both and tend to enjoy the Coen Bros. funnier films. It's almost too hard to choose with the options they provide.

Llewyn Davis. He's a struggling musician just like myself, albeit in a different genre.

I love so many of their characters that it's hard to whittle it down, but I guess I'd say The Dude and Anton Chigurh are my favorites. Walter's also hilarious and dynamic.

That's the thing. I don't think there are many if any other writer/directors that create such iconic and unique characters. That is one thing that makes them so distinct as filmmakers.

My personal favorite is Ulysses Everett McGill or "The Dude" but I could also argue for Charlie Meadows in Barton Fink, H.I., Marge Gunderson, Anton Chigurh, Walter, or Ed Crane.

Very few characters over the years have been poorly crafted. They are all very detailed, rich, and colorful. Each one exhibits very unique characteristics and many have distinct vocal cadences as well.

In addition to favorites like The Dude and Anton Chigurh, here's a few of mine:

Marge Gunderson (Fargo): "And for what? For a little bit of money? There's more to life than a little money, you know. Don't cha know that? And here ya are, and it's a beautiful day. Well, I just don't understand it."

Larry Gopnik (A Serious Man): "You understand the dead cat? But... you... you can't really understand the physics without understanding the math. The math tells how it really works. That's the real thing; the stories I give you in class are just illustrative; they're like, fables, say, to help give you a picture. An imperfect model. I mean - even I don't understand the dead cat. The math is how it really works."

Charlie Meadows (Barton Fink): "You think I made your life hell? Take a look around this dump. You're just a tourist with a typewriter, Barton. I live here."

Professor G. H. Dorr (The Ladykillers): "Madam, we must have waffles! We must all have waffles forthwith! We must all think, and we must all have waffles, and think each and every one of us to the very best of his ability."

Ed Crane
(The Man Who Wasn't There): "Me, I don't talk much... I just cut the hair."

Anton Chigurh was a product of a Cormac McCarthy novel. What the Coen brothers did was lend a bit of characterization in the movie to give him life. Turned out to be one of the best cinematic villains I have ever experienced.

Walter Sobchak in Big Lebowski was a standout for me. He pretty much stood firm to his opinions in some form when someone else tried to attack them, even if he was an idiot at times.

Although, I had to appreciate Tim Robbins's character in Hudsucker Proxy.

The Dude

Jack Lipnick and Ben Geisler-Barton Fink
Tom Reagan and Johnny Caspar-Miller’s Crossing
Arthur Gopnik and Sy Ableman-A Serious Man
Amy Archer-The Hudsucker Proxy

I could list a few more, but I'll stop there.

It was not a completely new character but the way he was re-imagined and directed had a Coen feel to it.

I love Ed Crane! Great character.

"I don't know where I'm being taken. I don't know what I'll find, beyond the earth and sky. But I'm not afraid to go. Maybe the things I don't understand will be clearer there, like when a fog blows away. Maybe Doris will be there. And maybe there I can tell her all those things they don't have words for here."

-Ed Crane

Underappreciated film.

So many GREAT characters including supporting roles, but this is a tossup between The Dude and Anton for me too:

Macy in Fargo, Brolin in NCFOM, Stuhlbarg in A Serious Man, and Steinfeld in True Grit are my favorites. I can get into why but I'll do so later, I can't type it all up right now.

My favorite easily. Your average guy, the kind of guy you'd meet any day and yet he's doing unthinkable sh !t and best part is its 100% convincing.
