I skipped the first one theatrically as I didn't think it looked very good, once it came out on DVD/Bluray and I eventually saw it I was surprised and I liked it. Sure there are some weak parts, but it's pretty creepy IMO.
I thought Annabelle Creation tied in perfectly with the first one, the ending won't mean much if you haven't seen the first. I'd give it a go! |

My review from the Movies sub-forum...
Annabelle: Creation is a prequel to Annabelle (2014), which is a prequel to The Conjuring (2013), and it includes references to next year's film, The Nun, which is also a prequel to The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 (2016). There's probably a flowchart somewhere that outlines all of this. For those who are new to this cinematic universe, however, I am pleased to report that you can watch, understand, and enjoy this new movie without having seen any of the other films. Your appreciation of the final 10 minutes of the film will be enhanced if you've seen Annabelle, but even that is not entirely necessary, because this film stands on its own two feet. For those who have seen all of these films, I am pleased to report that Annabelle: Creation is vastly superior to Annabelle, and that it even rivals The Conjuring in terms of both storytelling and creepy imagery. Director David F. Sandberg, who helmed one of last year's biggest surprises, Lights Out, takes over the reins quite nicely, and does a good job instilling a quiet buildup to this story that is reminiscent of the supernatural horror films of the 1970s that did not beat people over the head with gore or jump scares. There are plenty of jump scares in this movie, of course, but they're well-earned. It's tough to summarize Annabelle: Creation in detail without spoiling its charms, but it succeeds both at explaining the origin of the creepy doll and explaining the origin of the demonic possession case outlined in this film's predecessor, without being dependent on those films for an exposition. I've always loved horror movies about evil dolls or mannequins, going all the way back to my childhood, when I first saw The Twilight Zone episode with "Talky Tina." Here's to another solid entry in the evil doll genre! |

It's just as fun and artfully directed as David Sandberg's debut Lights Out. Maybe there's a few too many moments where the characters make questionable decisions, but that's to be expected from the genre. Seriously, for a modern film that's a part of a franchise it is as lovingly put together as an indie.

There is no way I would go back to a theater and see the same movie 2 and 3 times, that wouldn't make sense. Just buy it when its released on blu-ray...It won't be long!

This will be a blind buy for sure.
Loved the first Conjuring and to a lesser degree the sequel and Annabelle but I'm sure this will be fine also. Damn shame there won't be a 4K release though. If these movies are so popular and succesful then why aren't they released on the format? |

I thought Annabelle Creation was leagues better than Annabelle, which is watchable but pretty crappy. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who has liked movies from the Conjuring universe thus far.
Its got its problems and some pacing issues, but it felt a little old school, I really cared for the main characters (Janice and Linda), and I was entertained, even though you can spot the lame jump scares from a mile away. That UK cover would make for a nice steelbook. |

I like see a movie I love on the big screen as much as I can since nothing tops the experience.
