...they both kinda suck. Stick with the original and hope that long rumored fourth installment, which is allegedly taking the series back to its surrealist roots, finally happens.

Did I read on these forums that the dude in charge of this HD release is an unabashed grain hating, lover of DNR and EE?

I know it was somewhere.

That got me curious. Just watched that and was surprised at how much they liked it. Here's the video (go to 20 mins 14 secs for Xtro discussion):

The "dude" in question is Oliver Krekel, the owner of Digidreams Studios in germany. As for the owner of Second Sight in the UK... that is another matter.

Oooohh yes! At last! Can't wait as it's a genuinely brilliant piece of sci-fi from the UK, a true surrealist nightmare.

Some (potentially) encouraging news:

Lots of love out there for this movie, we want to do it justice!
I mentioned that a steelbook of this art would be most welcome:

Just ordered the German release with 2 Blurays and the cd soundtrack. Have I made a mistake? It's not due in until later this week so I have time to cancel

Do you mind being our guinea pig for this title?
Keep the order, view it and report back with your findings.

The film looks pretty good on the main Blu Ray, not the usual Platinum Cult scrub job. The 2nd Blu Ray has three other cuts. Only watched Xtro 2.0 so far which is a 35th anniversary version, looks horrific, DNRd to hell. However, this version features some awful new cgi in the abduction scene which makes Phantasm Ravager look like Fury Road, so no one in their right mind is going to watch this version more than once. It looks like someone's run it through Photoshop using one of those naff filters.

So as long as you stick with the main presentation, it is definitely worth it.

Update from Second Sight's facebook yesterday:

Quote:
If you need more scary clowns look no further than XTRO! We have begun working on our release of this 80s video rental favourite and many thanks to producer Mark Forstater who is given us great support. We expect an early 2018 release and have a lot planned. And in answer to some queries already received, we have accessed the new raw scan and will be doing our own extensive manual restoration work.

I recently got the German release. Only had a quick scan and it seems to have 3 HD versions all presented twice in the set for a reason I've yet to spot.

If Second Sight was able to license Xtro, could other New Line titles not be too far behind? Specifically, hoping that they also acquire Alone In the Dark (1982) and the Third Texas Chainsaw film.
