Default Dante's Inferno – PS3 Exclusive Divine Edition

PSN Demo: December 10th 2009 (North America)

Early access to the demo was just the beginning, as Visceral Games announces the Dante's Inferno Divine Edition, a PlayStation 3 exclusive version of the game packed with extra content at no additional cost.

The Dante's Inferno Divine Edition is the version all PlayStation 3 owners will be receiving once the game is released on February 9th, so there's no need to worry about changing over your preorders or making sure you don't get a gimped version accidentally. Whether they want it or not, they're getting it. What are they getting? On top of the game itself, the Divine Edition comes with developer commentaries, a Wayne Barlow digital art book, the game's soundtrack, and a digital copy of the complete Longfellow translation of Dante Alighieri's Inferno.

If you have told me three years ago that a PlayStation 3 game would be packed with the Longfellow translation of anything, I would have been impressed by your strange thought process and bought you an alcoholic beverage of your choosing.

"We are thrilled to offer an exclusive game pack for PlayStation 3 gamers," said Jonathan Knight, Executive Producer for Dante's Inferno. "The PlayStation platform has a long history of delivering AAA action/adventure games. Adding Dante's Inferno to that rich catalogue is very exciting for the team. And with the demo now available on the PlayStation Network, players can finally get a taste of what awaits them in the full game on Feb 9th."

The Divine Edition of Dante's Inferno certainly contains enough additional content to justify jacking the price up another $10, but EA is delivering this treat to PlayStation 3 owners for just $59.99, the same price Xbox 360 owners will pay for their plain vanilla version, barring any forthcoming announcements of special content for Microsoft console owners.

EA SENDS PLAYERS TO HELL IN EPIC ACTION GAME

(December 15, 2008) – An abducted soul, a lifetime of sins, a journey to the depths of despair. Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today that EA Redwood Shores, the studio behind hit horror game Dead Space™, is making Dante’s Inferno™ – a third-person action adventure adaptation of the medieval epic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. The dark fiction gave birth to the Tuscan Italian dialect and is widely considered to have defined the western world’s contemporary conception of hell and purgatory. The poem tells the tale of Dante who journeys through the twisted, menacing nine circles of hell in pursuit of his beloved Beatrice.

Written in the 14th Century, The Divine Comedy was published and read aloud in Italian (unlike the Bible), thereby making the poem accessible to the mass public. The poem delivers a striking and allegorical vision of the Christian afterlife and the punishments of hell. In part one, known as Dante’s Inferno, Dante traverses all nine circles of hell; limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery.

“The time is right for the world of interactive entertainment to adapt this literary masterpiece, and to re-introduce Dante to an audience that, until now, may have been unfamiliar with the remarkable details of this great work of art,” said Jonathan Knight, executive producer for Dante’s Inferno. “It’s the perfect opportunity to fuse great gameplay with great story.”

Teaser trailer is up on GameTrailers.

I'll be damned. I thought about this when I was reading the Divine Comedy, but wasn't sure how it would work in a game. Very interesting.

This was supposed to be a ps2 released game a while ago. The game I'm thinking about had the protaganist as a women who was able to shape shift for different situations. I think she was looking for her daughter. Not sure what happened with that game, but it had vaporware written all over it.

Divine Comedy is anything but boring, one of my all time favorite. If they do this right it could be a lot of fun actualy.

And screenshots I'm amazed EA released. They're not far off high res PS2 shots.

There isn't a PS2 version is there?

So Much Potential... But I think you're right. Video Games tend to turn anything with a great story into a desolate piece of crap.

Game Informer made this look pretty cool, I will have to wait and see, as this looks a lot like God Of War.

Yeah, I heard that the first boss is Death and after you beat him you get to take his Scythe!

Then you can chop people in two while you make your way down into the depths of hell

Its the same team that did Dead Space, so I hope they try to make some "scary" moments in this game!

Will keep an open mind on this one.

It could either be really good, since the Divine Comedy is an excellent piece of writing and would be an great game

Or

It could be absolutely terrible because the divine comedy is a excellent piece of writing and this turn out to be a generic hack and slash game

I hope that they do steal some stuff from God of War...if they do this game right, it could be extremely enjoyable...Dead Space was definitely last years sleeper hit, maybe EA is gonna try to do the same this year..with this one.

Either the way they designed the camera system here is terrible, or they're building the game using a PS2 engine.

Default EA, "it's best described as God of War meets Dead Space in hell"

Yeah, thats why there is some excitement for this game by some people!

From what I had heard, Dante is going to be a "kick-ass" warrior(somewhat like Kratos) and even the way you open treasure chests with the will be the same as God of War! lol

Here are some Known Details:
  • The game runs at a solid 60FPS and is brought to life by the excellent animations of its enemies and protagonist.
  • Dante Aligheri, the Florentine poet that the game is based upon, has been turned into a “muscular six foot knight with magic powers” to suit the tone of the game. Dante is fighting his way through Hell to save his lost love Beatrice, who has been murdered and wrongly sent to the underworld.
  • One of the first boss encounters takes place in “Limbo," an area of lost souls who are agonizingly close to God but can never reach Him due to a life of non-believing. It’s here that Dante fights Death himself and steals his magical scythe before plunging into the underworld.
  • The game shares the exact same control scheme as God of War, even down to Circle being used to open chests.
  • The game's artist Wayne Barlowe was chosen because of his work on Barlowe’s Inferno, a collection of images based on Dante’s poem.
  • Structurally, the game is designed to take the player through the nine circles of Hell. The first circle, Limbo, is where you will encounter Death and moving through the world areas get more horrific. Circle 5, “The Wrathful," is where violent people are forced to endlessly fight each other. The game will culminate in Circle 9, presumably with a massive boss fight against Beelzebub himself.

Sounds like a generic hack and slash, only thing that could make this stand out is art direction/design
