How many Laserdiscs in the entire series? 89? Like vinyl, one of the things I miss about laserdiscs were the covers, so much more real estate to work with. Awesome Evil Dead Book of the Dead Collection by the way.

Total episodes divide by 2 and that's pretty close. The covers are the best part.

I loved LD packaging but once dvd came along the limitations were immediately obvious so I had to jump ship.
The recent spate of Big Sleeve Editions from Disney are a reminder of how lovely LD used to be
And those Bond boxsets......!!!Yum

They were usually 2 episodes to a disc, 178 episodes total, so that's like 89 discs.

Anyone who owns any LDs will tell you when you get 4-5 laserdiscs in a stack they actually start to become rather heavy. Your average laserdisc weighs about 11.2 oz (including outer sleeve and liner sleeve). That means a complete TNG LD collection would weigh about 62 pounds!

Yes and no. CBS have made money hand over fist with their Trek streaming deals over the last few years and the TNG remasters made very little difference to their bottom line either way. What CBS wanted to see was a specific return on a specific investment via the physical media sales but for the reasons you describe (and several more e.g. the presence of standalones cannibalising the market and even causing resentment amongst some season set buyers, plus the quality control issues with both S1 and S2) it just never took off. First season did okay in terms of sales, it was downhill from there however.

Weird how 4:3 supposedly doomed the TNG remasters, yet no one complains about the bigger black bars you get with 2.39 features.

I wonder how much Star Trek: TNG is showing now on BBC America has influenced people in not purchasing sets? Also BBC American is showing Star Trek: TOS and now Star Trek: Voyager. It seems to me I remember watching Star Trek: TNG on BBC America for along time it seemed that was the only show they aired.

Just a thought.

Well really stinks. I am a completest and would love to have the entire Star Trek franchise on blu. Unfortunately, people didn't go crazy for TNG which I don't understand. TNG was one of the first series to be released back in dvd's early days and each season sold for around a whopping $100. Yet Trekkies forked over the money and it stayed at that price range for years.
You just answered your own question. Fans already had them, and spent $700 collecting them (I waited for steep price drops, myself. When the TNG blu-rays drop down into the $20's, I'll buy them again). I got Season One on a Black Friday deal, I'll pick up the others likewise.

I think a lot of Star Trek fans are simply tired of being treated like the ATM by CBS/Paramount, they just come to the fans for a quick buck and they try to hit the fans for all the $$$ they can.

Disney is a lot better at milking the fans dry, look how many people still eagerly buy anything that's Disney / Marvel / Star Wars and still seem to be craving more...

Have you checked Amazon lately? The whole series is only $119 on blu ray:

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Gen...ration+blu+ray

Several of the individual seasons are now down to $16 with free Prime shipping (some are through 3rd party sellers, but who cares?)

Had all the seasons already on DVD, wasn't going to double dip at THAT price, I can't justify it.

But once the price of the entire series fell into sales below $50.00....I FINALLY bought the entire series. I don't even feel bad for it. I just could not afford the previous price.

Price. Plain and simple. When the individual season dvd sets of TOS first came out in those rounded hard plastic cases prior to the remaster, those season sets were around $80 each at Costco (then price club). Star Trek was always been expensive when it first comes out on disc (whether it was dvd or bluray). I was never that much of a watcher of TNG other than the films, so I never got the dvd's of the individual seasons, also too expensive.
But also I think the trend with TV season media sets is to go with complete series sets if they are or will soon become available. The are generally more affordable than buying each season, and take less shelf space. That's what I did with TNG blu, bought the series set for $85. Figured it was time for me to finally watch the show, still haven't but will eventually.

As someone who has a large collection, I shop quite a bit and at various locations. Aside from original release time frames, I don't recall seeing them aside from a few instances at fye (full msrp) and maybe the now closed movie stop chain. I haven't seen them elsewhere. Amazon is the only place to easily obtain them. Without seeing them at Wal-Mary or Target, that hurts sales badly. Price point did that.
I am a late taker on Star Trek. I'm 31. I was 28-29 when I got hooked on TOS. I'll be getting them next year I hope unless a magnificent deal comes my way prior. I have this years probable purchases mapped out.
Having them on TV got me watching them. Which will lead me to buy them.

This is a bunch of BS.

CBS paid for new transfers and spent millions putting the show through post production again - something not needed on a typical TV series on Blu. Re-edited every shot. Recomposited all VFX, creating new high resolution VFX. Remixing the sound.

Yet $50-$60 a season was "too much" for some people.

Now there won't be DS9 or VOY in HD.

Paramount simply doesn't understand the market out there. They invested a ton of money into these restorations for home video, and then charged an arm and a leg. May sell great out of the gate, but charging so much for each season becomes a long, and expensive commitment that many don't care to buy in to. If Paramount only understand that, hey, maybe $40 seasons wouldn't be so bad, maybe I Love Lucy would still be around. But no. They charge extortionate prices and expect things to sell.

The new transfers and reintegration of the special effects cost a lot of money, but so what? Lowering prices could actually help increase the amount of units sold, to the point where it would still be quite profitable for them. Price things up in the sky, and people are going to walk.
