Default I need help setting up my sound system

My dad brought home some speakers and a receiver last night so I just started trying to set it all up today. And I'm struggling quite a bit to say the least. I have some pictures of what I've got set up so far, so hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction and advise me on what things need to be plugged into what, as well as what equipment I might need to buy:

I connected the individual speakers to the cables

The other ends of these cables were connected to the back of the subwoofer

Then I connected via cables the subwoofer and receiver

Here's the back of the receiver with more detail just in case

At this point I've used everything that came in the boxes except for this cable that I don't know what is used for. Both ends are identical:

So now I'm stuck. I have nothing to connect the receiver with my TV. The only thing that is really going to be using the sound system is my PS3. Are there extra cables I need to buy to get this thing going?

I appreciate the help. Let me know if anything has been done incorrectly so far.

That cable is your optical audio cable, which connects your PS3 to the optical socket in the digital input section on the back of your receiver. When you are hooked up, you will need to set your PS3 audio output to Optical (Digital) in the Sound Settings sub-menu.

Your going to want to bypass your receiver for your video as it is an older model and outputs at far lower resolution than your PS3 and TV do.

How are you currently connecting your PS3 to your TV?

My PS3 is hooked up to the TV with an HDMI cable. So at this point should I just leave the HDMI as it is, connect my PS3 and receiver with the optical cable, and then switch the PS3's sound settings?

Thanks man, I'll try it out.

EDIT: Thanks to your help I can now get sound out of all the speakers except for one. It felt like something was moving inside so I unscrewed the faulty speaker and this is what it looks like. Any ideas on how to fix it? I get the feeling that those pieces are supposed to be attached but I'm not sure.

Those look like Bose satellites, to me. Somebody must've upgraded to a lossless setup and sold their old ones.

We don't know how to fix it. But you can. Simply open up the other working speakers - remember the sequence in which you take it apart - and look inside. Compare the problematic speaker and the one that works and figure out what is different.
