Default American Vandal (Netflix)

It's already out, but couldn't find a thread for it...

Quote:
From co-creators Tony Yacenda (Pillow Talking) and Dan Perrault (Honest Trailers), and showrunner Dan Lagana (Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous), American Vandal is a half-hour true-crime satire that explores the aftermath of a costly high school prank that left twenty-seven faculty cars vandalized with phallic images. Over the course of the eight-episode season, an aspiring sophomore documentarian investigates the controversial and potentially unjust expulsion of troubled senior (and known dick-drawer) Dylan Maxwell. Not unlike its now iconic true-crime predecessors, the addictive American Vandal will leave one question on everyone's minds until the very end: Who drew the dicks?
Hilarious and strangely gripping mockumentary series. I'd recommend it.

That sounds like a pretty great idea for a series

Looks like it's getting rave reviews too (95% rating on RT) for those that care about that.

Yeah, this is a good one. I watched the first episode virtually by accident and ended up doing the whole series in a night.

I'd heard a little about it and had the impression it was going to be a broad, AIRPLANE-style spoof of the current true-crime genre but it's not at all. In fact, it's so well-done and so brilliantly observed, the experience of watching it is very much like the experience of watching MAKING A MURDERER or its ilk.

Whilst it's full of subtle comic notes - which I think will only get funnier with repeat viewings - what's surprising is how genuinely compelling it is. I was so engrossed in the detective narrative I kept forgetting I was watching a parody until something would remind me how ludicrous the underlying crime was; not a murder but the drawing of dicks on the cars in a school parking lot. This has the very clever effect of making you part of the joke. So don't expect a gag-fest; despite the premise, the show's too good to make cheap jokes but is deeply hilarious in the same, slow-release way as something like THE BIG LEBOWSKI. It's not as broad as SPINAL TAP but it's in that wheelhouse as well and isn't out of place in that company.

There's real skill on show here, on every level, and AMERICAN VANDAL ultimately transcends the label of parody or spoof to become its own thing, with something quite interesting to say about modern America. It falters a tiny bit in the last episode by dint of a little over-reach but by no means ruinously. The guys that made this are the real-deal and I'm predicting great things for them. I'd advise everyone to get in on the ground-floor. Try the first episode - it's only 35 mins; I'll wager most of you will stick with it to the end.

It felt like something new. For the American market, at least. We have a brilliant TV creator in Belgium who did things like this years ago. But I really liked it and I'm all for fresh things like this. Keep those coming, Netflix.

I finished this last night, and I was pretty impressed by it. If you think about the level of detail they were able to accomplish in creating something like this, it's just pretty incredible. They covered every base, and absolutely nailed the true crime formula down. What's great about the show is that, while it started out purely as a mockumentary in tone, it kind of takes on a life of its own, and feels incredibly realistic, and gets pretty serious towards the end. It was actually kind of thought-provoking, and provided social commentary on our biases and expectations of others in society. I'm not sure if there's another mockumentary that has done that for me..

I'd highly recommend people check this out, and also to stick through till the end.

New story. I'm in. More people should watch this. It was a pleasant surprise. Fresh, original, clever as a satire, funny as a whole and I kinda binged it, cause I always wanted to know the rest. And if you're not convinced by the two first episodes, patience.

Not watching the trailer. I just finished my rewatch of season 1 and it was as awesome as I remembered. I wanna see the next season without knowing anything, even if I know the new tagline.

For someone like me who likes documentaries, American Vandal works very well. In other contexts a TV show like this might be looking for me, or with excess of childish/cheap humor, or too stupid. Fortunatedly, this is not the case. It's smart, and gives you desire to see how the mysteries are unveiled.

The only thing about the new season, is that I have too many shows on queue before see it.

Finished already. I loved it. And it retains the essence of the first season, but you can see it has batter production (there's a in-universe reason for this and why the first one was professional looking).

Just finished it, and thought it was fantastic. Equally funny, if not more, than the first season. And comes to another poignant and meaningful end. Can't recommend this show enough.

Loved season 2... allllllmost as good as the first but lacked a little bit of the magic.

Still great and hilarious with a slew of great new characters... Kevin and Paul Schnorrenberg being my favorites. Great central mystery with a pretty perfect conclusion too.

Hoping for a third go around...

So lame, both seasons were so great. Hopefully another platform picks it up.
