Default Loving Vincent (2017)

Quote:
On 27th July 1890 a gaunt figure stumbled down a drowsy high street at twilight in the small French country town of Auvers.

The man was carrying nothing; his hands clasped to a fresh bullet wound leaking blood from his belly.

This was Vincent van Gogh, then a little known artist; now the most famous artist in the world.

His tragic death has long been known, what has remained a mystery is how and why he came to be shot.

Loving Vincent tells that story.

Loving Vincent is the world’s first fully painted film.

We painted over 65,000 frames on over 1,000 canvases. We shot the film with actors, and literally painted over it frame by frame. This is a very laborious and time-consuming process. It has taken us 4 years to develop the technique, and it took us over 2 years with a team of over 100 painters working at studios in the Polish cities of Gdansk and Wroclaw, and a studio in Athens to complete the film.

The reason we made the film is not because we want to be the first, or that we want to set any records, it is because we believe that you cannot truly tell Vincent’s story without his paintings, so we needed to bring his paintings to life.

I enjoyed this film and my eyes swam in the phantasmagoric oil paintings come to life, so I'll likely pick this up. That said, I wish the filmmakers hadn't relied on such a conventional plot--really, we didn't need Van Gogh's life played out as formulaic whodunit--and had used their unique visual approach to a little more imaginative effect (as it is, the mise-en-scene is as earthbound as the plot).

This film is apparently getting an international UHD Blu-ray release from Universal:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=299163

Note that Universal does not appear to be distributing the film in the US (Cinedigm) or UK (Altitude Film Distribution), so interested parties will likely have to import a Continental release.

Saw the film at the cinema yesterday evening, my opinion in brief:

Quote:
Loving Vincent is an animated film that tries to delve into the reason behind the death of famed painter Vincent Van Gogh by suicide (or as some alleged, murder), and in the process say something about the man and his life. In terms of the narrative, the film is a little rote, and a more nuanced exploration of Van Gogh's mental anguish can be experienced in Maurice Pialat's masterpiece simply titled Van Gogh. LV's USP instead is the process by which it was made. Initially the film was shot with actors against green screens. Then the footage was handed over to a team of painters that refashioned them as hand-painted images with backgrounds in the style of Van Gogh's work. The result is often astonishing as famous works by him are reworked into settings in the film. Visually the film is a joy to behold and should be checked out for that reason at least.

I don't suppose there's any way to know if this will be sold in stores or not, is there? I'm not an Amazon Prime member, so will probably be buying from either Walmart (currently at $14.61, free shipping) or Target (currently at $17.19, free shipping). I've ordered from both of those places before and I think neither of them use any kind of padded envelopes or boxes. I'd hate to see this come in a damaged blu-ray case (... and then have to deal with the stores to fix the problem). Been there, done that ... not fun.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I'm wondering:

- If the extra crap is worth the extra money. A digital copy would certainly be useful, at least (assuming it's UV and/or MA, and not something locked to a separate site like Shout does). The other stuff, not so much.

- If the price on this will drop too like it did for the "bare bones" release? I wouldn't mind paying an extra $5 for these "bonuses" but paying double the price doesn't seem worth it to me.

I thought the most interesting thing about the film is how much effort went into rotoscoping every frame in oil. Once the novelty of that wears off, the film is a snooze, with nothing interesting or new to say about Van Gogh. It’s a technical exercise which would have worked better as a short film. I’d rent this first to see if you like it.

I would agree, it's not for everyone especially those who want a story about Van Gogh directly instead of a story what people thought about him. I did like because it wasn't a biopic that checked off all the "greatest hits" boxes which is all stuff we already know as well. Stylistically, it's a masterpiece. Story wise, less so but it's competent for the story they want to tell.

Question

I adored this in cinemas and can't wait to own it.

Anyone know the difference between the Special Edition and the standard release?

Standard

Special Features:
Walking through Vincent's Neighborhood
The Making of Loving Vincent
Interview with Douglas Booth
3 Paintings in 1
Interview with Eleanor Tomlinson
Creating the Props
Beginning the Animation

Special Edition

Presumably all of the above, plus:

Includes an O-Card, free digital download and four collectible postcards.

(No idea if the digital download is UV/MA or something tied to a site like Shout digital copies tend to be.)
__

I think it's incredibly dumb to split the release in this fashion. I don't know what the logic or rationale behind it is. I have both preordered for now, in case the SE drops in price, but this is making me want to cancel everything outright and wait for a price drop.
