Default Question-Sony BDP S550 or PS3?

I have just bought a large Sharp LCD. I have about a 5000.00 dollar budget for my audio set up.I have been looking at the Pioneer SC-05 for my reciever. Here is my question.I would like to go for 7.1 suround sound. If I am reading correctly the PS3 is only capable of 5.1 where as a stand alone player like the sony BDP S550 is 7.1 I am not much of a gamer but I thought I might give myself that option with the PS3.How ever I really want to acheve 7.1 suround. So PS3 or stand alone? Any comments are appreciated. Thanks Neil

...but if you really don't think you'll play any games, I would consider the Sony S350.

Yeah, the 550 would be nice...but not gaining much over the 350.

Sony S350. The latest generation stand alone players are just as good as the PS3 and have IR remotes.

I have a couple of PS3s, and when guests come over..... guess what..... They're out of luck, because I don't own any games

If you don't intend to play games, I'd get the 350/550.... I'm planning on picking up a stand-alone in the near future now that more suitable models are available.

s550 > ps3

just the "game" factor when picking between the 2 nowadays...

550 is a better blu ray player

550...it does True HD at true 7.1...if you have a 7.1 system. If you Aare only looking at getting 5.1 go PS3!!

This is from the PS3 website..

"A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. is required to output 7.1 Ch. audio, supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format, from the HDMI OUT connector. This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel."

Only other thing to consider is that you can't get a universal remote to turn the power on the PS3. You either have to use the PS3 controller or manually turn it on. There are work arounds to get the Harmony Remotes to control the PS3s but they can't turn them on. And maybe that's not a big deal??

that was printed LONG before the PS3 even had the ability to decode Dts-HD MA. (since launch)

I can promise you its 7.1 Dts-HD MA my friend.

Can PS3 Stream out DTS-HD Master Audio to my AVR?

No. But it doesn't need to. PlayStaion 3 decodes DTS-HD Master Audio internally, then sends PCM (upto 7.1 channels) to your AVR via HDMI.
