Are animated movies worth it on 4k? Want to see more opinions.
To my untrained eyes, I couldn’t tell a difference between the standard blu-ray of Boss Baby and the UHD disc. Thoughts? I’ll have to wait to get my player back to test more (Trolls, Sing, Boss Baby again). I’d like to save my money going forward if there’s really no difference. Thanks. UHDs have better compression, so inherently they're better than the BDs. Whether or not it makes a noticeable enough improvement over the BD will vary from person to person. I don't think I've seen an animated movie on UHD yet so I honestly don't know.

I was highly skeptical until I actually saw it. It makes everything so much more vibrant and alive. There's no really no comparison between the 2 versions.

I own the first two Despicable Me films, and think they are reference quality 4K discs. The colors look absolutely stunning in Dolby Vision.

Depends on the nature of the art. Hair and fur should look far better in 4K as would anything with a lot of detail. Anything on a curve would look better in 4K. But big blocks of the same color aren't going to make any difference because they are inherently low resolution (except at the edges).
But resolution aside, HDR to some extent and wide color gamut (if implemented) would probably make a difference if there are colors outside of the lesser color gamut of Blu-ray. There's no hard and fast rule because it depends on the source material. Think of all the movies today that are largely desaturated or given a teal push. Wide color gamut and even HDR probably wouldn't make any difference on those films. But a true Technicolor film should look far better. |

So many of these threads asking if something is "worth it".
Well that would depend entirely upon what "it" is, wouldn't it? |

Example, Spirited Away DVD vs BD comparison: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=4355&d2=4356&c=1783 You can't tell me that there was nothing to gain going from SD to HD for something like that. Last edited by jala12; 11-06-2017 at 11:24 PM. |
