Ah well, I'm assuming that if the Director could not tell the difference in sharpness/detail between the 16mm and 35mm versions, I won't be able to, either.

Reading between the lines, the fact that it would've cost twice as much to do the initial scan and been a lot more work to put it all back together was probably the true impetus for using the intact IP. A/B roll restorations are very labor intensive -- and it's not like he would've came out and said, "Yeah, it could've looked better, but..."

Besides possibly utilizing the original elements, the MOMA restoration could also benefit from advancements in scanning and restoration plus a much higher res workspace.

(Hypothetically, that is. I guess we won't really know until we see it!)

I can't find anything about any screenings happening in October, so maybe he was being optimistic about the timeline.

Thumbs up

I haven't owned this film since VHS, so I'm in for a top-notch Arrow BD presentation. Would also like to see the restoration in theater, if that comes to pass.

I was considering picking up the Secondsight trilogy and now I read this. Has there been any confirmation this is still happening?

They're still in the "theatrical screening" phase of the remaster. In fact, apparently I just missed a screening in NYC on Monday, hosted by Henenlotter.

Oh so it's a real thing. Guess I'll wait on it. Are there any reviews up online about the new transfer screenings? I find it hard to believe the movie could look a whole lot better all things considered

The Image/Something Weird is actually better looking than the UK version:

Doesn't mean it can't be improved upon, but worth noting the Something Weird US is currently the best version of this.

NEW US TITLE: Basket Case (Blu-ray) Limited Edition

A riotous and blood-spattered midnight movie experience, now immortalized in a lavish new 4K restoration by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

US pre-order link will be live soon!
Release date: 27 February

THE TENANT IN ROOM 7 IS VERY SMALL, VERY TWISTED, AND VERY MAD.

The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter (Brain Damage, Frankenhooker), 1982’s Basket Case is perhaps his most revered - a riotous and blood-spattered midnight movie experience, now immortalized in a lavish new 4K restoration by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Duane Bradley is a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed, fleshy lump whom he carries around in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at the seedy Hotel Broslin, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation. But tensions flare up when Duane starts spending time with a pretty blonde secretary, and Belial’s homicidal tendencies reach bloody new extremes.

Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where the movie would become a staple of the infamous 42nd Street grindhouse circuit), Basket Case has clawed its way from its humble origins to become one of the most celebrated cult movies of all time.

I was hoping we'd get the feature-length doc from the UK disc, but I'm glad this is official. I picked up the other two over the summer, but I've been waiting for this release to get the first one.

That covered all three films though, so Arrow, if anything, would only have included a truncated version, and the new Bonner and Van Hentenryck interviews will assumedly cover much of the same territory.

I never picked up the current release so I’ll definitely pick this one up. I love the way Arrow does their LE’s.
