I'm interested in exploring world cinema, so I'm curious to see what film(s) from your native country you think are the best.
Anyway, there's only two Croatian films I really like: H-8... (1958) and The Birch Tree (1967). Sadly, the rest that I've seen were mediocre at best. |

![]() ![]() Fun fact: I was an extra in a Barbadian movie, Chrissy. I even attended the premiere, then a few screenings afterwards. ![]() IMG_20170805_130454.jpg |

In my opinion - it's hardly the consensus of the critics or audiences or anything like that - this is the greatest Brazilian film. Most local productions are more concerned with hollering about social issues than actually employing cinematic tools to achieve artistic means of expression. To the Left of the Father is difficult, evocative, poetic and sophisticated. That doesn't mean it's just an exercise in style - it portrays an old patriarchal society that was poisonous to free-spirited young men and women.
Mind you, I haven't seen many Brazilian films. Why? Because most of our classics and arthouse greats haven't been released on DVD or, if released, the editions either leave a lot to be desired technically or are extremely expensive. Others have long been out-of-print. Some Glauber Rocha movies aren't anamorphic. Ruy Guerra, Júlio Bressane, under-represented. Central Station and Pixote haven't been released in widescreen on DVD. Blu-ray is a format that never took off - not even the globally popular City of God has been released on Blu-ray here! Last edited by Cremildo; 11-04-2017 at 03:41 PM. |

I would recommend these Flemish ones, I'll post the French ones later.
- Pauline & Paulette (2001) - The Memory of a Killer (2003) - Any Way the Wind Blows (2003) - Steve + Sky (2004) - Someone Else's Happiness (2005) - With Friends Like These (2007) - Left Bank (2008) - Moscow, Belgium (2008) - LOFT (2008) - The original is great, the US remake not. - 22nd of May (2010) - Come as You Are (2011) - North Sea Texas (2011) - Bullhead (2011) - KID (2013) - The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) - The Verdict (2013) - WELP (2014) - Haven't seen it, but I think it might be quite good. - The Ardennes (2015) - Same as Welp. - Vincent and the End of the World (2017) One that's high on my watchlist : Cargo (2017), looks great. In some way, I consider Mr. Nobody a Belgian movie. It's written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael, a respected Belgian director. Of all locations, about 4 were filmed overhere. A certain part of the budget was founded by Belgium. And in the countries surrounding us, it was actually advertised as a Belgian movie. |

Black Christmas ,.jpg
Black Christmas -.jpg ![]() Bob Clark (director) considered it to be more of a psychological horror film than a slasher film. |

![]() ![]() And it's not even close. Cronenberg is a treasure. Watch all his films, he is the greatest thing my country has to offer cinematically. ...but if by "foreign" you meant "non-English" then we have a rich Quebecois (i.e., French Canadian) film industry, honestly it is in ways healthier and more robust (and certainly more distinctively non-American) than Anglophone cinema produced here. In which case I would recommend ![]() The director, Denis Villeneuve, has gone on to be the most prominent of the Quebecois directors moving to Hollywood (a bigger trend than you think; look it up! Certainly French Canadians have been more successful than English Canadians at making the move to American cinema, at least lately.), he has made a variety of American films since, most of the great. But he started off making a bunch of great French Canadian films. And, for the record, the generally accepted "greatest Canadian film" would be ![]() For a little more experimental, there is always ![]() Also, I earlier this year hosted a poll of the top Canadian films, the results may be of interest to you. As a caveat, there was definitely some ambiguity of what actually constituted a "Canadian film," there was some discussion in the voting thread, that being said, it is a solid list. Largely, but not exclusively, English language, there were some French ones too if you want that. Also, a lot of horror films are Canadian (as the poll revealed); besides the aforementioned Cronenberg, there are classics like this. ![]() Which is arguably the greatest of all slasher films. Incidentally, the also excellent recent remake was made by a Canadian director, but it in no way really qualifies as a "Canadian" film. As a last note, besides English and French, there is an emerging (if we are being charitable) Inuktitut language Canadian film industry, most exemplified by ![]() As I understand it, other Inuit languages are of late getting films made in them as well, but the Inuktitut is the most common so far. |

I knew someone would have asked it sooner or later, and I'd be embarassed by how little I know from my homecountry.
Left aside all of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, whom I love too much to be objective... I'd say Bicylce Thieves, but I promise to come back with a more backgrounded reply. |

My home country is the US but I've been watching Bollywood movies my whole life. Hard to pin down a "best" (the consensus is probably either Sholay ("Embers"), which is basically an Indian Spaghetti Western, or Mughal-e-Azam ("The Great Mughal"), which is like one of the old-time Hollywood epics a la Ben-Hur or Gone With the Wind). My personal favorite is Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ("Something is happening [romantically]"), which is also a great introductory movie to Bollywood. Other faves are Swades ("Motherland") (movie about an expat Indian in Washington who goes back home to rediscover his roots, directed by the guy who was an Oscar nominee for a movie called Lagaan in 2001), Hum Tum ("You and me") (Indian version of When Harry Met Sally, but better IMHO), and Delhi Belly (mostly in English, basically the Indian version of a Guy Ritchie movie, has some faces that might be familiar like Riz Ahmed's mom from The Night Of).
I'm pretty young so my tastes tend to gravitate towards stuff released in the last 25 years or so, aka what I grew up watching. I'm less well-versed in the older stuff. I've seen most of the big titles and they're fine, but I prefer to watch the newer stuff. Bollywood has modernized substantially in recent years, cutting down the number of musical numbers and shortening run times to appeal to a broader/more foreign audience. Some of that is for the worse but a lot of it has been an improvement IMHO. But anyway, if you're looking for somewhere to start, the aforementioned titles should do you well. Hope that helps. (LoTR Aside)
Once Were Warriors Quiet Earth What We Do In The Shadows Hunt For The Wilder People Brain Dead I was really impressed with "Resolve" a "true to life" docudrama about witness intimidation set against a man that witnesses a feud between rival gangs go wrong. I vaguely remembered the case when it happened, but this film honours that case beautifully.. |
