All the plotpoints you complain about were major plotpoints in the original source material.
You just made my argument for me - nothing wrong with keeping Turturro's role small throughout. The dumb move was giving him a leading role and then pulling it back to supporting.

  • Speaking of which, the trial shouldn't have ended in a mistrial -- it should have been an *innocent* verdict (not "not guilty", but straight up "innocent").

Not sure why you don't think Turturro should have superhero powers
Seriously disappointed, bro. I had high hopes when I started reading that post.

LOL I'm glad you weren't showrunner.

It isn't a small role in the original show either! It's one of the main roles, just not as central as in the HBO show because in the original (set in England) you've got the whole solicitor/barrister dynamic to deal with.

Saw HBO's The Night Of earlier this year & thought it was brilliant. Incredible mini-series that really walked you through everything that takes place once they take someone in for a crime, process them, etc. Also really liked the NYC urban setting, which ended up being another character in the series.

One of the many elements I liked about the series was that, realistically, there was no closure at the end,
[Show spoiler]i.e. it still wasn't clear who actually committed the crime. I don't think it was Naz, but since he blacked out even he himself wasn't sure. It could also easily have been someone else, since at least 2-3 others had motive & opportunity (as was seen).

Turturro was one of the main stand-outs in the series. He did an amazing job playing the sleazy, borderline-disreputable lawyer who hung around the police station looking for cases. It made perfect sense that Naz's parents ended up hiring him, since they were a working class family that couldn't afford a high-priced, expensive lawyer. It was interesting that Turturro actually ended up having Naz's best interests at heart, and also ended up doing a great job defending him. I can also see how someone like him with a serious but not life-threatening health issue (that affected the way he could dress) couldn't work at a high end legal firm, even if he had wanted to.

I have seen one of the BBC series (there are several seasons) that The Night Of is based on, and I found TNO far superior to this original UK show.

Only two seasons of Criminal Justice were ever produced, not several, and the 2nd season isn't anywhere near as good as the first (which the Night Of is based on). Dd the season you watched revolve around an abused woman who kills her husband? If not you might be thinking of the wrong show.

I know what I saw, and it was the UK series Criminal Justice. Yes, the season I saw did revolve around an abused woman who killed her husband.

And, I still attest that TNO is superior to Criminal Justice.

You might know what you saw, but that was season two and it was the last season of the show, so no it did not run for "several" seasons. You might know what you saw, but do you know what you were saying? When the information you post is inaccurate, you can expect posters to think you might have been mistaken. That's all I was doing with my post, confirming if you had Criminal Justice in mind or some other, longer running UK legal drama.

I'm also amazed that you can make a comparative assessment between Criminal Justice and Night Of when you didn't even watch the season Night Of was adapting.. I'm not saying you would change your mind had you seen Criminal Justice (it's nowhere near as slickly produced as the HBO series and the script is often didactic, but the plotline makes more sense), but it's widely known that season two of Criminal Justice didn't match the quality of the first.

Point taken! Thanks! I'll be sure to take great stock in what you say from now on, since I really appreciate your input & reviews! You're obviously a master at reviewing movies/TV shows...NOT!!!!

It is true that I only saw S02 of the UK series Criminal Justice, which dealt with a woman who was being abused by her spouse. Unlike HBO's The Night Of - in which the true perp. was never revealed - in S02 of CJ it was evident what had occurred.

I will try to check out S01 of CJ at some point. That being said, I have no doubt that I will prefer TNO to either season of CJ. TNO was not only a great portrait of the way the CJS in the U.S. may work for the average person (who doesn't have a lot of $), but also a great portrait of NYC - which may as well have been another character in the film. I doubt S01 of CJ will be as impressive.

Look Ana, you want to be a jackass then fine, I was merely pointing out that you can't compare one thing to the other when you haven't experienced BOTH of those things. It's like saying "I watched Season Two of True Detective, imo the first season can't compare to The Night Of". How the hell would you know when seasons one and two of true detective are completely separate entities? Exact same thing with Criminal Justice, much like True Detective the only link between seasons one & two are that they share the same screenwriter. That is it. Different stories, different setting, different characters, different cast, different producers and directors, different level of quality.

I'm not sure why you're being so hostile. He's only telling you what you saw.
