Default storing dvr to computer

How's it going? Well My DVR is getting filled up. I think this happens with everyone. We record so much and never get around to watching anything and it just stores up. I though I could link a cat5 from my dvr to my computer. I heard somewhere that a lot of people store excess movies etc. on another harddrive. Only problem is nothing recognized. What can I do to even things out?

Not necessarily...but maybe dvd's. I was more concerned with the extra storage...ex. using my computer since the hd on my dvr is filling up.
