Default Reasons why you chose your a/v receiver

I thought it would be interesting for us to share why we bought the receivers we did. This is not a whos is better type of thread, but just to see why you chose what you chose. If you can, prioritize them, just the main reasons.

...and be honest

here goes...

I chose the the Sony 5300es:

1. xvycc and deep color compatable (all my components support it, tv, bd player etc.. the picture looks amazing) also 20 fps compatable

2. TrueHD & DTS HD master decoding

3. The way the front display looks in a dark room

4. It was on clearance

5. Sony invented blu-ray, so i figured its gotta be good for video enhancing!

6. Read excellent reviews

7. It sounds awesome

I needed 4 HDMI's and a receiver less that $400 with decoding of TrueHD and DTS HD MA

So I went with the Onkyo tx-sr606

I wanted the Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA codecs, the 4 HDMI inputs and the power (130w/p/c x 7).

Plus I got it on sale for $1,100 as opposed to a MSRP of $1,500 when it first came out.

I'm a bit pissed now though, cause at FS (in Canada) they have it on a Boxing Day Special for $699!

As for me, I've got an Onkyo 705, chosen for it's high ratings across the HT forums and review sites, inputs and price. After selling my old Yamaha AVR and the Onkyo stereo receiver that came free with my purchase, it only cost me ~$100 to upgrade to HDMI switching and HD audio decoding.

I purchased the Onkyo PR-SC885 Pre/Pro because I had 4 power amps (for 7.1 system) and I needed one of the best current Pre/Pros to replace my Proceed AVP. Now I have 6 power amps (4 are monoblocks; 1 3 channel, and 1 stereo).

Ricshoe...My bad, i meant 24fps...as for how can a blu-ray be enhanced, well quite simply, when you have a tv, bd player and a receiver that are all capable of the xvycc & Deep color, the color depth is amazing...simply amazing! And yes there is a noticale difference.

here are a few links:

i love monobocks! Used to have a pair of McIntosh's driving my Altec Lansing Stonehendge speakers back in the late 70's. Didn't have any more money, so I used my old Pioneer 9500 SE II Integrated as a pre-amp. I still have that Pioneer too sitting in a box !

I understand that, but you are not taking advantage of any of that with blu-ray, HD-cable, etc. As I mentioned above, the only sources where you will actually see any of this are certain HD video recorders (while viewing videos you recorded). You are impressed with the colors, but xvycc & deep color have nothing to do with it.

Please don't take this as me putting you/your system down, as I'm not. You've got a pretty good AVR there.

Merry Christmas!

For me, the ability to convert all inputs to HDMI output was a must.

I was wall mounting a plasma TV and wanted to run as few wires as possible. I picked up an Onkyo TX-SR605, which was one of the first recievers to do HDMI upconversion for less than $600. Does everything I needed it to.

Quite the contrary, xvycc is a circuit type board or somthing that does its own processing. Thats why some tvs, bd players, receivers etc...have it and some dont. It take you video signals and in turn reprocesses them to reproduce the color spacing. What you are speaking of is deep color only. There is a difference between the 2. For example, someone correct me if im wrong, but the pioneer elite 92 only supports deep color and not xvycc color spacing the same goes for some plasmas and lcds as well. Take a look ate the spec on some of the different components and tv's

I bought the Denon AVR-4308CI for two reasons:
  1. I wanted a surround pre/pro with HD audio codecs. At the time, nothing was available and based on Denon's reputation, I assumed that it will do a good job of serving as a pre/pro. I am not disappointed.
  2. When I purchased it, the Denon receiver was one the few receivers with two HDMI 1.3 outputs. I needed two because I have a projector and a 65" TV in my home theater room. We only use the projector for Blu-ray and DVD movies. We don't use it to watch TV. I am sure you are aware that projetor lamps last around 2,000 to 3,000 hours and are very expensive.

I just bought the Sony HT-SF2300 (awaiting delivery). I chose it because it will match my BDP-S550, and it looks damn good. I chose the overseas version because it has floor-standing speakers. I don't need 50 million analog inputs; all I need is HDMI. I also like the fact that it is small.

I choose my Sony 920

After listening to the Yamaha 663, onkyo 606. Harman 254/354 I found i didn't like them. I did like the Pioneer 1018 and Sony 920.

Pioneer was 2 inches to big for my audio rack, and the Sony dropped $80 below the Pioneer, so I could save money.

Wanted hd decoding, lpcm, full rms reciever.
