WOW, heated there for a minute..... Dont listen to people like Tense that won't even LISTEN to a certian product, they aren't speaking from experience. I heard the Onkyo and was not overly impressed. The Yamaha was nice, but too warm (bright) for me, Sony/Pioneer where both great IMO. Those would be my recomendation.

Wild Wizard. The 920 is a full bandwidth receiver, that is why you would want to spend the extra $100. Add on the other features and its worth it. Full bandwidth the way I understand it is they measure the receivers ability to carry a sound to the end without losing any of its power and becoming distored. the 820 is not rated to do that, the 920 is. Also, crutchfeild rates the THD at .09%... the manual confirms the .09% also.

The 920 is a great receiver, highly recommended. I love mine, I was torn between the pio and this, in the end I made a great choice.

I don't understand the problem with he son receiver. I have an es model which has been great for me. I used to have a yamaha receiver and I have heard no difference in sound between them. You may find that people that hear a difference arprobably using the auto setup. Which with some plays with eq. I personally shut it off and do it manually with no eq but that is just me. The sony is a very nice receiver and you wont be disappointed

A question for 920 owners: I have read in this forum that the set-up for this model is relatively easy. But it occurred to me that the average member here may be light years ahead of me and easy may be unbelievably difficult for me.

I ask as I have read that the owners' manual to 920 is not very good. (got this off of owner reviews on amazon which is not the end-all-be-all to my decision, but still...) But is not true that the 920 is like the PS3? and instructions are available via interface that shows up on tv? If that is true, then the manual does not seem to be of utmost importance.

I am really close to making my first venture into HD audio and have narrowed receiver choices down to about 3. But being the techno-phobe that I am, I do not want to kid myself and biting off more than I can chew if this is gonna be a pain to install and set up....

I too am not the most tech savy person, I will tell you the hardest part for me was putting the speaker wires in the back of the receiver, mostly due to the fact I didn't have much room in my AV rack, and a couple of the speakers wires didn't have enough slack, and I have large hands.

Yes the GUI (on screen display) makes it very easy to set up, Sony receivers are about as plug and play as you can get. Total set up took me about 30-45 minutes, most of which was putting the speaker wires in the binding posts.

Really, this is an easy receiver to work with. If you have ever had an audio receiver, then this one is a sinch to put together.

awesome....that's kind of what I thought but wanted to confirm with someone who knew firsthand. At only $ 378 too. The Onkyo 606 was at $349, not too far apart in price. I think the 920 has more HDMI inputs... another selling point for me in addition to GUI. I hope to do some listening this w/e at BBy and/or CC.....getting closer!!!!!

I listened to the Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer and Sony, all in that range, they all sound really similar, the Yammy was a little warmer (brighter) the pio and sony were more neutral, pio was a little brighter of the 2 tho, and the onkyo... edgy, plus I wanted the extra features of the Sony over the Onkyo, and I personally don't like the look of the Onk's...... Overall I was most impressed with the Pioneer, but I really like Sony and it was cheaper and the pioneer couldn't fit into my AV Rack... so Sony it was. No regrets. Best receiver, I have ever owned.

or better yet; you give him facts and links on why he should purchase the sony dg-920 huu? i would care less because i already have a receiver, and i dont have to prove anything to no one, but since you, JASONR insist, please do so......

Sure! I am mobile now, but will post a review for the 820 when I get home. The 920 only improves on the 820, so it should suffice. Also, I can personally recommend the receiver because I own it. Where you have never even heard it and are recommending against it.

For those of you who research/follow the release of these receivers year by year, how much lower do you think the prices will go?

Don't get me wrong, the 920's price seems like a great deal to me and in my budget. But if they're gonna drop again, (day after Christmas sale? New Year's Day sale for examples???) I might could wait a little longer.....

What do you think????

they might drop...but they are going to be discontinued eventually (probably soon)...so they will stop being sold altogether. Kinda get em while you can and hope for a sale. (or buy from somewhere that does 30 day pricematch)

Many of you will have been waiting for the verdict on Sony’s new receivers. Well, we can confirm that the STR-DG820 has definitely been worth it. If all the new models are as this good – and they can get that Sky HD nonsense sorted out – Onkyo et al had better watch out

Taken from the above review. I am not sure if the above concerns also apply to the 920 or not...and to be honest with you, I'm not completely sure what it all means for that matter.

Is it a point to be concerned about given I'm currently using PS3 60 GIG as player??? Would PS3 handle all of that? I don't even have a 1080P display at this time (click my profile if interested) as far as the upconversion concern goes, but am thinking I will sometime in future....

p.s. what does "pre-outs" mean????

The 920 does upscale, but does not have preouts. You will not need them unless you are planning on using seperates in the future.

One of our receivers is the Sony 920. It is great. I don't need to verify it with the opinions of websites and magazines to base my judgement on it. I bet if the Sony haters were told they were listening to an Onkyo, they would love it.
