Default Ever had a Purchase deleted from your history?

I’m about to pull to trigger on selling off all my physical media in favor of going completely digital. But before I do, I wonder if anyone here has seen any video purchases removed from their Purchased library. We’ve all seen titles come and go from the store, but remain completely accessible through your Purchases. But has anyone also seen titles deleted from your Purchased section?

Your worry is the very reason to keep your physical media

I recently had the first Back to the Future movie disappear from my library. All three still show on MA though. They were redeemed from the trilogy set. Probably worth repurchasing the set in case they go 4K.

Really? Is it still removed from your Purchases? I have them since redeeming their digital copies when the Blu-Ray set first came out and I never noticed them gone from my purchases.

I'm not incredibly worried about it, but just wanted to get an idea from people on here if they've ever had that happen before. Plus, I want to still have a chance to trade-in all my movies at FYE before/if that place closes, too. I had a local books/video/music store in my city close down last year, but I got a chance to trade-in nearly $1,000 worth in store credit. So I would just hate to miss that chance by hanging onto them, then FYE being gone when I finally decide to trade them in.

That's interesting. It's still in the iTunes Store, in my case, the same way I digitally redeemed a long time ago, and it's still in my list of Purchases. You may want to contact iTunes Support about that. That might be a glitch or something.

There are video podcasts (such as when Showtime would offer first episodes of seasons of shows like The Tudors and Dexter as free videos under podcasts) which seem to have completely gone away, but as far as movies which I used a code for or purchased, no.

What has happened is a couple titles which no longer are for sale won't show up when I search for them, but if I look alphabetically through my purchases, they are there and can be downloaded.

Another interesting case is The Dark Knight, I redeemed it as an digital copy disc when it first came out and that gave the IMAX version of the film, and this version no longer shows up when searched for, but does among purchases. I also have a second version of the movie, which is the widescreen version that ported over via MA (I had it from UV family sharing with my brother), and that's the one which shows up when I search.

Yeah, and I'm thinking, while studios can take content up and down from the Store, there has to be something in the Terms & Conditions that say something about how they can't be removed from our Purchase library. But I wouldn't know what to look for to verify that.

I think its just a matter or restoring your purchase via account settings. I’ve had music disappear from my library and got it back via settings

I lost about a dozen films from my iTunes library when the distributor Metrodome went bankrupt. Films like De Palma's Passion, Electric Boogaloo: The Untold Story of Canon Films, The New Girlfriend all disappeared overnight.

My purchase history was even missing theses purchases until I contacted Apple support who apologised and gave me some rental credits as compensation. Kinda blows, you would think that Apple would keep a copy of the master file for customers who have bought them.

Not really a concern when you mainly buy from the big studios, but sucks for the smaller companies and the people who like arthouse stuff.

I don't think Apple has any rights to hold "master copies".

Do Apple even store movies on their servers? Or are they streamed from distributors through iTunes?

I bought my AppleTV in December 2016 and deleted all my movies from my iMac. These were all with downloaded iTunes Extras, not the current streaming extras.

I then discovered that three or four movies had no Extras on AppleTV - the distributors had pulled the movies and re-issued with new or altered Extras, so although I still had the movies I'd have had buy it again to get the Extras back.

If Apple Support staff are to be believed, this was a loophole that they hadn't anticipated but they assured me that steps had been taken to ensure it didn't happen again. Now even a studio removes a movie or it's extras they remain in your library.

Losing content because of a studio going bankrupt is probably something Apple can do nothing about. The law regarding digital movies may need to changed to fix that.

I've only completed lost one purchase in iTunes - the score to Edward Norton's The Incredible Hulk was a limited release, maybe even exclusive to iTunes. It was on a hard drive that got damaged and it is no longer available in the store or the cloud.

I'm assuming this is the UK store? All of these movies are still for sale in the US store.

It's not a question of them keeping a file, but a matter of distribution rights. Normally when movie licenses change hands, continuing to make the movies available to existing owners is part of the deal. If that doesn't happen for whatever reason, iTunes may lose the license allowing them to distribute the film. This is rare (I don't know of a single case in the US), but of course it should not be allowed to happen at all. Apple is probably pressuring the content owners to prevent this from happening since they know it endangers their business if customers get the perception that they could lose their purchases.

Of course Apple has copies of the movies. It's not just a small number of servers. Apple runs a large CDN (content distribution network) with replicated copies stored in many locations throughout the Internet. This infrastructure is part of the service they provide to the content owners.

I just wasn't sure how it worked. iTunes Support is always so quick to fob issues off on the distributor that I wasn't sure whose severs stream what.

Regardless, Apple can't provide us with movies that they are no longer legally allowed to. They should however lobby for the law to changed in a circumstance like this.

Bought Young Sherlock Holmes from Amazon on my PS3. Would be nice to know where that went, cuz it isn't available to me anymore. And, no I didn't rent it.

You should be. Especially with the possible post net-neutrality internet shenanigans to come.

It really just comes down to how much you trust these companies to give you continued access to your digital purchases.
