Question Scratch Resistant. Gimmick?

Blu-ray is being advertised as "Scratch resistant". Avoiding scratches is no problem for me as I am VERY careful with my DVDs and BLUs.

But will this help avoid problems with rental discs not playing because they are so scratched? Or is it just a gimmick?

Have there been any tests done?

You can find anything on Google and YouTube I've gotten some rentals that look like somebody was playing frisbee with them at Popeye's chicken, but never a scratch.

Yep .. our kids that historically chewed and spit out DVD's haven't made a dent in any of our Blu-ray discs. It's been 2 years now and they look like new.

It's not a gimmick.

Kids being careless with DVD's was always a point of contention in the house.. it's a non-issue with the Blu-ray discs.

I wish they would put it on CD's.

my Planet of the Apes Blu (original) got scratched just putting it back into the case, and im careful as with my discs. Some blu-rays do feel thicker than others.

Apparentley they are pretty much almost every thing proof. Although I did have a rentle not work on me, but some renter/s were idiots and got finger prints on the reading side of the disk. I rinsed it under a little water dried it off it played like new.

Even though there apparentley pretty much every thing proof, I would and still do treat them as I would fine china.

It is utterly awesome. Ulike DVDs where an ex rental was often game over, they are pretty easy to clean up.

Default scratch-resistent, not scratch-proof

I had rented a copy of Children of Men on Blu-ray and it was scratched up enough that it skipped constantly and unwatchable. At the time, it should've been a relatively new release with very few rentals (esp. on BD), but it was scratched up. I suppose a previous renter could have tried testing the scratch-resistent properties and managed to overdo it....

Loser.

Every disc i have rented from netflix looks brand new. Finger prints seem to be a pain in the a$$ tho, i had the smallest finger smudge on my "John Mayer : Where the Light Is" and it started freezing during "Good Love is on the Way" until i cleaned it. I think it's because the content is so much closer to the surface than on dvd's that finger prints are such a problem. Also the reason why they HAD to make them as scratch resistant as possible.

That video is flawed he uses what? a cloth to scratch the DVD then uses a knife to stab the Blu-ray.

This was my Christmas Surprise yesterday when I discovered my Player would not play "The Incredible Hulk". Restarted the player, then took the disc out to see if there may have been dust build up, but when I flipped over the disc, to my surprise I found a nice little indentation and a scratch on this brand new packaged sealed disc. Thankfully, Amazon will be shipping me a replacement.

I have received a few Blu-Rays from Netflix that wouldnt play because they were scratched pretty good.

I talked to the Rep about it and he said they have had a lot of problems because of BD's getting scratched and not playing and were working on better packaging for them.

Havent noticed any different packing for them yet. That was about 1 month ago.

I have to wonder if some people are *testing* the hard coating on the rentals to see how far one has to go before the BD refuses to play...

Yeah fingerprints are a bigger problem than DVD's but they just require a clean. "Scratches" are often just a streak across the disc that needs wiping as well...I know more than a few times they have looked like real scratches but then they just wipe off.

For those that may remember......that's exactly the way CD's were marketed years ago. Oh yeah they said, it's much better than vinyl and tape (tape I'll agree with). No scratches, no warped discs, no hiss, no pop....all of that.

Are Blu-ray discs impervious to scratches? NO! But they are better than DVD and CD. So, please put your movies back in the case and be careful how you handle them.
