Default Help, Ohms and Speakers

Hello everyone,

I have a question and am hoping I can get some help.

I was browsing through my receiver menu and saw that my RTI12 were running at 6 Ohms.

I'm not exactly sure if that is good or not, and I believe I could not change it to 8.

Is this something I should try to change?, am I doing anything wrong ?

I'm not in my house right now, so when I get home I can give more details. If anyone has any advice, it will be very appreciated.

THANKS

It might not, I'm in no means an expert, but there are some people here who are.

The RTi12 speakers have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. That does not mean that the impedance is constant. Impedance varies quite a bit with frequency. It rises above 8 ohms for some frequencies and drops below 8 ohms for other frequencies. Nominal is a representative number like average. Just make sure your receiver's impedance is set to 8 ohms. Some receivers do not have the option to change this. Read the thread on Impedance & Sensitivity of a Speaker. It has a sticky under Speaker Discussion.

Thanks BD, I was just reading your thread. But for some reason Im pretty sure I tried to set it up for 8 ohms and was unable to do it, I know my receiver can. I'll double check when I get home and post again.

I couldn't change the impedance to 8ohms with the speaker type on front-normal but when I switch it to front-btl it's in 8 ohms. Not sure what this means gonna do a little reading see if I can find out.

Apparently When i use BTL (Bridged Transless), I only have the front speakers on. But I still don't understand why I can't set it to 8 ohms. Can anyone please help me

I don't have much experience with Onkyo receivers. Perhaps, someone with a similar receiver can help you.

I've been doing a lot of reading but still am very confused. When I put in 8ohms the options for my surround back speakers get blacked out. When it is in 6 it is still available. I can also put it in 4ohms but have not tried it yet. I believe my receiver can handle the 4 ohms load but I'm not sure. Here is the link for my receiver specks.

Looks like your receiver can handle 6 ohms. In that case, I wouldn't worry too much. Periodically, check and see if the receiver is running extremely hot. If that is the case, then worry. If the heat is normal without smelling or burning your fingers, then enjoy your movies and don't worry so much about the specs.
