Gunsmith Cats OVA Kickstarter Planned for Blu-ray

Well, it's official. Reported by Crunchyroll, AnimEigo's next Kickstarter event is planned for Kenichi Sonoda's Gunsmith Cats OVA. This has always been one of my favorite anime OVA series and I can't wait for this one. With Bubblegum Crisis, Riding Bean and now Gunsmith Cats, I was actually hoping AnimEigo would have kept such classics as You're Under Arrest, Urusei Yatsura and Oh My Goddess so that they could be released to Blu-ray, as well.

Gunsmith Cats is awesome. I remember buying this on VHS from AnimEigo way back in the day, when anime VHS tapes from AnimEigo were $39.99 for a 30 minute anime VHS tape. The same guy who did Riding Bean, Cannon God Exaxxion, Bubblegum Crisis OVA series, Gall Force, Wings of Honneamise, Otaku no Video and many more.

The Gunsmith cats manga series is what introduced me to Kenichi Sonoda. The man is an awesome talent. But, Riding Bean is one of my all-time favorites.

Gunsmith Cats was released by ADV on VHS, not AnimEigo, so this is a license rescue by AnimEigo. I remember buying the first episode on laserdisc at Anime Expo 97. While I enjoyed the anime, I thought it wasn't as good as the GSC manga or Riding Bean. The original manga, which was published by Dark Horse in nice omnibus editions, is unfortunately out of print. I sold my copies a while back, and it took some hunting to find them again for a reasonable price.

Obvious you don't know the current situation with AnimEigo. During the past ten years, they have lost many of their licenses where they opted not to renew. Urusei Yatsura, Oh My Goddess OVA, and You're Under Arrest are just some of the anime they no longer have licenses to. Before AnimEigo can release You're Under Arrest on Blu-ray, they would need to reacquire the license to the anime series. Since the licenses for Kousuke Fujishima's anime have gone up since the first season of Ah! My Goddess has been released, the cost of the license would be exceptional.

I stand corrected. There were only a few anime distributors who were releasing licensed anime back in the mid to late 80's, and AnimEigo was one of the first anime distributors in North America.
