Default problem with sharp LC32SB23U

ok so my dad got a sharp LC32SB23U for xmas and we are trying to set this thing up. initially we had it hooked up just thru the cable box via coax cables, now we have these GE HDMI cords that we are using to connect the DVR/cable box to the TV. if the TV is on than we cant use the cable box controlls to switch channels/vol etc. if the TV is off than the controlls and cable box work fine. everything is hooked up correctly so i am not sure as to why this is happening. also im havign a problem with the local HD channels. the local ABC channel when we are on the channel the picture is in the center of the screen and is surrounded on all 4 sides by big black bars id say about 4" widths on all 4 sides. if i change the picture to stretch or to zoom etc via the tv controls than i have a problem with the cable box again. for example if i stretch it, itll be in widescreen mode but the Guide that i get on the bottom of my channels via the cable box become stretched and dont fit to screen. how do i remedy this problem? how can i set up this tv to just be widescreen or full screen on HD channels and have the cable box fit to screen without it being too big? sorry for this long post just lookign for any help. this has been very frustrating.

does the cable box settings have an option for TV aspect: 4:3 or 16x9?

what cable company do you have? perhaps someone with the same can comment.

so the cable/DVR remote does not work when the TV is on?

or the TV remote does not work?

....does the cable box remote have a learning function? you might have to map it to the TV...thats the only way to change volume for me with Dishnetwork.

i havent foudn any setting that changed the aspect but i will check im sure its around somewhere. my main problem right now is the fact that the box remotes do not work when the TV is on but they will work if the TV is off. craziest thing, im usually good at trouble shooting but this has me stumped. even went as far as to switch out the box since the 4 boxes we have in the house are all the same and all the remotes work on the other boxes and it still doesnt work.

*box remotes wont work if tv is on but will work when tv is off**

yes it does but i cant even use the remote at all if the TV is on. it wont let me change channels, the volume, chekc the tv guide, i cant do anything. i can however use the buttons on the box itself and itll work fine. it doesnt make sense why the controlls stop working when the TV is on.

try this out:

How do I program my remote control to act as a universal remote?

Quote:
1. Turn on the desired third party equipment you wish to program (TV, VCR, DVD or AUX)

2. On the top of your Service Electric remote, press the device you wish to program (TV, VCR, DVD or AUX) and the OK button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The device LED will turn on indicating the unit is ready to be programmed. (The device LED will turn on for 20 seconds. The next step must be entered while the LED is lit.)

3. Press the Channel Up [+] or Channel Down [-] button one at a time. The remote will emit a series of power on/off commands. Release the Channel Up [+] or Channel Down [-] button as soon as the equipment turns off.

4. Press the same device button (TV, VCR, DVD or AUX) to store the code. The device LED will blink twice to confirm that the code has been stored.

5. You can verify that you selected the correct code by pressing the Power button on your Service Electric remote. The desired equipment should either turn on or off.

...I believe that is your cable provider, no?

yes... i dont want it to work as a universal remote. on my old tv id have the controls for the tv and controls for the cable box. id use the tv remote to turn on/off tv but use the cable remotes to change channel etc. the controls to the cable box should still change the channel regardless of me programming the tv intot he remote. the only way for me to change channels on my box thru my box remote is when the tv is off. which obviously is wrong i should still be able to change the channels when the tv is on. it has ntohing to do with me programming in the tv into the box remote.

yes it does
can you type out any of the options related to video? (or take pictures?)

...without actually being in the living room with you, its very hard to trouble shoot!

i cant find the settings anywhere in my cable box to change the ratio. however though i fixed my maim problem of the controlls. after literally hours of stumbling around trying to fix this problem it was a simple stupid fix. the tv obviously has to be on the right input for it to work which it always was. the problem was the AV Source mode or whatever its called. The AV source had to be on the same input as well. Hopefully that makes sense to someone but either way, the problem is fixed thank you all for the help.
