Yeah the extended cut is the only way to go with this film AFAIC. The theatrical cut is too choppy due to the missing footage. I could already tell stuff was cut out the first time I saw it in the theater especially in the 3rd act.

Several of the nearest theaters initially didn't screen the movie out of fears of violence but then slowly added after it topped the box office. Wasn't nearly as big of a fussl as say Brokeback Mountain when just about every town it seemed refused to screen that film in 2005.

It has the director's cut so I'll happily scoop this on sale.

In a perfect world we would be getting the "historically correct cut" without the influence of either Tomica Wright or Andre Young.

Anyone who is even remotely interested in the Dr. Dre Ruthless/Death Row days should check out Michel'le's biopic called Surviving Compton:

Obviously it doesn't have the slick production values of SOC but it's a nice movie in itself plus it definitely isn't as shamefully "corrected" as SOC.

Yeah SOC glosses over some of the history (not that I'm an expert), but as a movie it's dope.

Despite its shortcomings, I do think it's a good and entertaining movie. Even if it is for nostalgic reasons alone. Hearing various NWA songs blasting from a commercial movie theater's sound system, is something I could never imagine back in the late 80s when NWA was setting the rap music world on fire.

But some of the things that have been changed are just too much, never mind the things that have been omitted. And it gets worse as the movie progresses. Someone who is not really up to date with the movie's covered time period, might get the wrong idea about certain things. I also thought a couple of scenes were a bit goofy and unintentionally funny.

So yeah, whenever I watch this, it's with mixed feelings.

I do wish they included a lot more stuff especially with how bad the rivalry got with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre and didn't sugar coat certain things (I'm mainly looking at you Dr. Dre) but for the film that we got it's a masterpiece IMHO.

Great movie. But do studios decide what to release in 4k by pulling movie names out of a hat?

Everything from the '50s through the '80s released in 4k is either an anniversary divisble by five or tied to a new movie release. But many other releases seem really random, like this one.

Not random at all. Next year is the 30th anniversary of the album Straight Outta Compton

That movie was horrible. Michele did that to hop on the money train. She even said so herself. What a dumb chick to constantly get beat supposedly but never ever said anything or tried to leave. I watched that crappy film and wanted two hours of my life back. SOC is 100 times better and tells us about the rise of the greatest rap group of all time! Michele's film was a joke!
