Default Pioneer VSX-1018 or Sony STRD920

Im getting a receiver and Im real interested in these 2. Both are similar enough in price. I dont have a use for the extra HDMI input for the sony yet but other than that which do you recommend? Ill be hooking up my PS3 btw. Also buying speakers shortly after. Probably 2.1 system then add center and surrounds once I get paid for some side work in late Jan.

Both are really nice. I own the 920 and love it! If the 1018 could be had for the same price at the time I bought my receiver, it would have been a tougher decision for me. I have 0 regrets though. I would recommend going out and listening to them both.

Personally, seeing as my new Elite 03 is leaps abounds above my previous Marantz and above every other receiver I've ever listened to at any big box store - I would recommend the 1018.

I would get into more details, but I'm about to shower.

What speakers are you planning on purchasing?

I listened to both of these and liked the Pioneer sligtly more, in the end though I bought the Sony and have actually been so impressed that I don't regret the purchase of the Sony over the Pioneer at all. The Sony is an excellent receiver, but then so is the Pioneer. The decision was killing me for almost 2 weeks before I bought the Sony, and even after I did, I had hoped I didn't buy the wrong one. Now that I have the Sony, there is no regrets and I am sooooooo happy with it, I know I bought the right on for ME. This will really come down to which you prefer more when you hear them side by side. Don't make this a popularity contest, the real decision is you going down and listening to them and deciding for yourself.

I was at bestbuy today looking at the pioneer unit and it is very nice looking. The only thing I didn't like about it was the binding posts on the back had a cheap feel to them. Other than that it seemed very nice and was quite heavy, I would say at least 30lbs..

Ok Im going to go with the Pioneer , the specs are great and looks so much better than the sony . Now I need to find a couple good Floor standing speakers and a sub. Then Ill pick up a CS and a couple surrounds later in Jan. Although Ill probably give in and just buy them all haha.

I'm a big Sony fan, but I gotta say the look and specs on this Pioneer model is very impressive!

When I bought mine on Boxing day I noticed it was a heavy sucker. The box said 36.4lbs.

Im glad I made the right decision. Cant wait for it to get here. I need to get some speakers so I can actually make use of it though. Im leaning towards Sony SS6000's for fronts at the moment with out too much research.
