I really never thought we'd see this one, and that the first Fox Searchlight title would be The Shape of Water. I'm really glad to be wrong.
I wonder if it will get an Atmos/DTS:X remix? Somehow, I bet not, and that's fine. |

The first Fox Searchlight 4K was Wild.

Yeah, but that doesn't count as it was in the first batch of releases, and since then, other than the rumor of Brooklyn, all subsequent Searchlight releases have been Blu-ray-only.
Of course, the real test will be if they ever release a film not distributed by Fox internationally, but for now, this is a positive sign. |

This film is superb in every way. One of the very best of the year. Oscar caliber performances all around, and a great script. Excellent film. Glad it's getting a 4K, too.

And what will be very interesting to me, is if, say, both The Shape of Water and Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs get UHD BD releases, which now seems likelier than not, depending on reception, then that's two titles that Criterion would be interested in releasing as well, which might add additional pressure for them to start releasing UHD Blu-ray. I don't see how Criterion could release a title on Blu-ray-only that Fox has released on UHD BD. Last edited by McCrutchy; 12-10-2017 at 12:24 PM. |

I wouldn't say it looks like raw footage or anything like that, but it is a fairly plain looking film so I wouldn't expect it to be a reference release by any means. Now, The Shape of Water, that could end up being a "show off" disc (kinda disappointed it didn't get any premium formats theatrically, as think I would've liked to have seen it that way after viewing it)

Only a slight thumbs up from me, the same for my dad who I saw it with. If the reviews are good enough on the UHD for PQ and audio then it could be worth grabbing eventually, anyway. It might be worth a few repeat views, but I don't have any sort of yearning to see this film again and again. It's no Fargo, though that would be a big expectation to put on a new movie. Personally, I think it's getting a little too much praise for what it is. One plus side is the impressive cinematography, the work of Ben Davis. There are some nice scenic shots in this film. Should be a good fit for 4K/HDR/WCG treatment. I assume it'll be an upscale. Oh well.
