This is one of those movies that I really enjoyed seeing at the theater, but that I am conflicted about revisiting on Blu-ray. (Sort of like Manchester to the Sea)
Here's my movie content review.... Several months after her daughter is raped and murdered, Mildred, played by Frances McDormand, takes matters into her own hands by renting three billboards along a country road in order to keep the crime in the spotlight and to shame the local police for their inability to find the killer. This garish act of outrage becomes an instant news sensation and ignites a chain of events, both tragic and comedic, that rattles the entire town. The ensuing battle of wits between the grief-hardened mother and the police chief (Woody Harrelson), who is haunted by the unsolved case and who is also fighting his own battle against cancer, plays out in unexpected ways that expose the flawed humanity of both parties. Meanwhile, an explosively short-tempered cop, played by Sam Rockwell, responds with incensed fury by pursuing those who are close to Mildred. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is an offbeat slice of dark Americana that feeds off of the increasing sense of resigned helplessness in our society as we read daily news stories about racial injustice, sexual assault, and corruption. A sliver of hope runs through the bleakness, however, and writer/director Martin McDonagh surprises the audience by examining the capacity of people to make 180-degree personality changes and by reminding us that lost souls can find a foothold during tough times. McDormand delivers one of her finest roles to date, even rivaling her Oscar-winning work in the 1996 film, Fargo, and her merciless tirades provide the story's most exhilarating moments. Rockwell commands equal attention, however, and shines in the most complex performance of his career. This movie also benefits from brilliant supporting parts by the likes of Caleb Landry Jones, John Hawkes, Zeljko Ivanek, Lucas Hedges, Peter Dinklage, and Abbie Cornish. Dark comedy is difficult to pull off, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri stumbles a few times along the way by veering into implausible terrain. A handful of quirky moments, reminiscent of the more over-the-top films by the Coen Brothers, come close to derailing the story altogether. Despite the narrative shortcomings, though, this movie ultimately succeeds as a timely parable that uses a seemingly idyllic small town setting as a microcosm for our country's overall state of being. |

Agreed: he’s a great actor. I watched MOON the day after seeing BILLBOARDS. HE’s pretty damn good in that one too. Still looking for LAWN DOGS. I hear that’s his best role, but I’ve never seen it. Good review btw. |

1. - Panoramic extravaganzas like say Star Wars films or Star Trek films, and 2. - intimate close dialogue scenes where you could cut the tension with a butter knife. I think this flik falls into the latter category.... ![]() |

If I'm being honest, as much as I loved Get Out, Three Billboards was the best film of 2017 (that I've seen thus far) and absolutely deserves that Oscar.

I'm thinking that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is going to sweep up the big Academy Awards this year.
It's a really good film, but it's also just controversial enough to be uncontroversial. Movies like that usually tend to win Best Picture. |
