Default Do I need a receiver if I aleady got PS3?

My ps3 has the latest update, logitech z680 speakers. Do I need the receiver or new set of speaker in order to enjoy blu-ray experience, what do you recommend?

Well you cannot connect your loudspeakers to the PS3 as there are no such connections on it. All you have is an HDMI out. I think the idea is to connect the PS3 to a receiver with the HDMI connection then from the receiver connect to each loudspeaker individually. Or so is my understanding.

Yes you need a receiver. Onkyo seems to be popular on this site. I have a Harmon Kardon and I love it. There are some new models out that will give you the HD sound that is on some/most Blu Rays. I know Best buy has the HK 154 for $349 this week.

Even better with HDMI.

As everyone else has said, yes. The PS3 outputs the sound information to a receiver. Speakers hook up to the receiver.

The Z680 has an optical port on it I believe, so they can.

The Z680 is a simple reciever already, you don't need to, and in fact, looking at it, if you were to set it up with a reciever, you need to make sure to run some either optical cable, or analog cable from the reciever to the Z680's reciever. And well, the problems with those speakers really not being tested with a real reciever only through the Z680's reciever is really just not suggested.

If you want to run a reciever setup, sure, I'd suggest running analog audio cables out to the soundtouch control center and keeping the speakers connected through it and the subwoofer instead of connecting any of the speakers directly to the reciever.

I didn't know the speakers had a simple receiver setup. In that case you could run to them from the PS3...maybe, but I would be doubtful that you will get the full sound experience.

Use an Optical cable as mentioned, and set the PS3 to Bitstream.

Ya if you want to go up in sound quality, pretty much need to either running 5.1 analog audio from a reciever over minijack stereo [and you'll prolly need connection adapters to get two analog rca cables to a single mini-jack] to the soundpanel.

Or, replace the subwoofer and hope the other speakers play nice with the reciever. Pretty similar to getting a HTIB type setup really .

You won't get bad sound out of the speakers as is , just not the 'best' sound.

People should look up the equipment the OP had listed before replying blindly. Thankfully reiella and crackinhedz did.

I have this exact speaker system and it sounds fine. I am using it on my PC but still works fine. No reciever needed.

Would this be a good substitute for someone that can't quite afford to jump into HD sound yet with a receiver and good speakers? I need something cheaper to replace my Panasonic HTIB that I got a few years back.

Mugupo, the whole point of getting a Blu-ray player (and PS3 qualifies as such) is to enjoy the better image and better audio. Even if you connect your Z680 computer speaker setup to the PS3 directly, you will not be benefiting from the enhanced resolution that BD carries. Optical cable cannot carry hi-rez audio, so you audio will be automatically downgraded to standard definition by PS3 before it sends it out. To get the full benefit of the hi-rez audio, not only you need to connect your PS3 toa decent receiver, but you also need to have a good set of real home theater speaker (full range speakers preferably).
What you are doing is fine if you are on a budget, but if you can afford the upgrades then you will certainly realize the difference between a good setup and PC speaker system.

I have to admit all I have is a tv and my ps3, no receiver, no external speakers, 2.0 surround sound is the highest that I think I can get away with as it is, as I live in a small apartment... perhaps in the future..

u know, it doesn't have to be loud. the more speakers you have, the less volume you require.

if something ever happened where i couldn't have a surround setup, i'd prolly just settle with playing PSone games through headphones til i could get back up with a proper surround setup.
