Default Blu Ray Audio Question

I have my sony blu ray player hooked up to my tv using hdmi. I recently bought a home theater system and after calling support the only way to get sound from my blu ray player was to plug rca cables to the aux in the home theater. I wanted an hdmi connection and since this home theater doesn't offer it I was wondering if I can just buy a receiver, connect my current speakers to it and have 5.1 surround sound using hdmi. I have the Sony S350 blu ray player and the Panasonic PT 960 home theater system.

You could, but I wouldn't do that. How about taking back the whole home theater system and buying a receiver and speakers. Since you just bought it

HTIB are limited in what you can do with them. Definetly return it and by a receiver/speakers.

If you can return it, do that. If not, what would your budget be for a new receiver.

You could always try to sell the whole thing on Craigslist or ebay and buy a really nice new setup for under $750-1000.

All you need is an Optical Cable. Get one and connect it from the s350 to the receiver and you'll have sound. It's really just that simple.

No, it's really NOT that simple. He would not be getting HD sound when he play his Blu-ray movies

I can try and return it but what would I tell them? and my budget would be around $1,000. Hopefully less. Any recommendations?

Thanks for the support.
