Default Anyone else getting frustrated that 4K UHD may take over the market on day?

For me, I don't see a huge jump in quality from a 2K/4K blu-ray to a UHD. I've seen plenty of examples now. The difference is marginal IMO. Most of the reviews I read on here for 4K say the same thing. I'm not interested in new releases, only catalog titles. But if this is where the home video market is headed, it makes me want to stop collecting altogether. Anyone else feel the same way?

4K is taking over the market? Since when. Most people still buy DVDs.

No. DVD has yet to die. Quite frankly I think UHD is helping to keep physical media alive.

I think UHD will die, or even less and less catalogue titles will be released on this format.

You aren’t going to hold back technology, and neither am I.

I hope 4k takes off like Blu-ray did.

I'm convinced that this site has the entire market for UHD. It reminds me too much of Squeeze LD: meant to be the future of laserdisc but few actually went to the trouble of buying the equipment to play the discs.

I really hope it dies, but I know it won't. But if you take a movie like DELIVERANCE: it was one of the first blu-rays to be released. If a 4K Ultra HD were released for that film now, YES, the jump in quality would be drastic compared to that original release. But if you put DELIVERANCE on a blu-ray with the same 4K remaster as the UHD, that would be more than enough for me. Again, I know the difference would be marginal.

i wouldn't worry about 4K taking over anything. DVD hasn't gone away and Blu-Ray is just getting a real foothold. as mentioned most people don't really know the difference to begin with and as long as the picture is ok then they are good. my wife is a perfect example she doesn't get it or care. only because i push on blu does she really buy them. she still gives me hell for upgrading as buying a movie i already have seems stupid to her.

blu-ray will have far fewer catalog titles than DVD and 4K will have even fewer. i will only upgrade a very few catalog titles to 4K (when i even get around to getting it to begin with) as blu-ray is just fine with me.

I was at Best Buy the other day and this guy pointed to American Assassin Blu-Ray and asked for the regular edition. Meaning DVD.

I am more worried that bigger stores are reverting back to DVD. I have two Walmarts and 2 Targets in my town, and the DVD's outnumber the Blu-Rays. I am not worried about 4k.

Doesn't matter if it does.
I was heavily into DVD and at first reluctant to double-dip for Blu-rays. Eventually I agreed the improvement was worth it.

But I'm satisfied. 4k, 8k, 16k, whatever... unnecessary for me. No need to triple-dip. The Blus will be "good enough".

The truth is streaming has taken over. All formats are heading to the niche category. Very unfortunate.

I don't really see the problem. Your current discs aren't going to stop playing just because there is a new UHD version, and if it only looks a smidge better, it's not like you will feel the need to upgrade. If the UHD does end up looking a lot better you at least have the option to upgrade.

I also think many catalog titles that were shot on 35mm film will benefit from 4K more than a lot of recent digitally shot films that are being finished in 2K and then being upscaled for the UHD.

Maybe that’s true but once people start getting new TVs it’s not like they are going to buy 1080p sets. If you’re in the market for a TV today then you are a fool not to buy a 4K tv.

I recently had my high end 1080p set die on me so it was time for me to make the jump. I’m getting a UHD player for Xmas. I have yet to see a single UHD bluray but there is no chance I’m buying regular blurays for new releases now that I have everything I need.

I don’t think regular blurays are going anywhere anytime soon though. If dvd and bluray can coexist for as long as they have then UHD and bluray can coexist.

So you're concerned that brand spanking new 4k scans of catalog titles are going to supplant the scans we've been getting? No offense but as concerns go that's kind of weak on two levels...

A) It's not gonna happen.

B) It would be freaking awesome if it did.
